The prizes were created by Alfred Nobel, an inventor, entrepreneur, scientist, and businessman who provided money to create the awards after his death in 1896. Between 1901 and this year, the prizes have been handed out 615 times to 989 people and organizations. The awards are presented by the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm, Sweden.
