Jimmy Cliff was a singer and songwriter. Born in Jamaica, he was originally named James Chambers, and was born during a hurricane, which destroyed his home. He grew up in a very poor area and started singing at his local church at the age of six.
At 14 years old, Cliff had a big hit in Jamaica with his song Hurricane Hattie, and his music career took off. In 1965 he moved to London in the UK to record more records. At first he struggled, saying, “I couldn’t find my place,” but in 1969 he began to have success with top-selling records like Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His songs often protested against war and injustice and had a positive message.
Cliff also acted in films, and released lots more songs.…
