The Blitz is the name given to the bombing of Britain during the Second World War (1939–45). From 1940, German planes dropped bombs on London and other cities, destroying and damaging two million homes. Set in London during this time, this story follows 14-year-old Ella, who seeks shelter every night in the London Underground with her little brother, Robbie. They forge an unlikely friendship with Quinn, who has run away from home and plans to “do her bit” for the War effort. There’s also Quinn’s brother, Sebastian, and Jack, who Ella initially dislikes. This captivating novel vividly describes the details of a wartime city. Best suited to older readers, it’s a sometimes sad story of friendship and growing up.
