On 13 June, King Charles’s birthday honours were revealed. Every June, to mark the King’s official birthday, people who have done outstanding things are honoured. This year, 11-year-old Carmela Chillery-Watson was made an MBE, which stands for Member of the Order of the British Empire. Chillery-Watson, who has LMNA congenital muscular dystrophy, a condition that weakens muscles, has walked and wheeled hundreds of miles to help raise more than £400,000 for Muscular Dystrophy UK.
Chillery-Watson is thought to be the youngest person to be made an MBE. Chillery-Watson said she felt “ecstatic” to be honoured. She added that she wants to “make a difference to the disability community, to be able to show them, you’re strong, you can do whatever you want”.
