A new art museum that focuses on migration opened in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, on 16 May. Migration is when people leave their home country to find work, education or to improve their lives in some way. The museum, called Fenix, aims to share “stories about love and farewell, home and feeling at home, or seeking happiness”. It’s exhibits include paintings, sculptures and installations.
One of the exhibitions, called The Suitcase Labyrinth, features more than 2,000 suitcases that the museum has collected from people around the world. Visitors can listen to an audio guide that tells the stories of the owners of the suitcases. The oldest case dates back to 1898 and arrived in the Netherlands from Russia.
