Of the more than 11.6 million people who voted, nearly 54% chose Dan over his rival, George Simion. The vote was the second and final round of the election. The first round took place on 4 May and involved more candidates. Simion and Dan finished as the top two and progressed to the second round – but Simion received almost double the number of votes that Dan did. LUCKY DOGS On 16 May, a celebration of dogs began at Goodwood in West Sussex, England. Inspired by Goodwood’s name, the Goodwoof festival welcomed 12,000 dogs and 20,000 people. A study by the University of Bristol has found that school dinners help children eat a wider range of foods. The study looked at children from pre-school age until 13 who were “picky eaters”. It found they were less likely to eat certain foods if they took packed lunches to school, but when they had school dinners they ate more varied foods. The study said this could be because school dinners allow more choice and children may be influenced by what their friends eat.…

Taking part in the natural world is what brings the writer Melissa Harrison joy, and she does this in lots of different ways – gardening, walks and starting each day by feeding the birds. She told Positive News magazine, “I scatter a few dried mealworms on the ground, just enough for their breakfast. And then I make my own. ”Harrison writes fiction and non-fiction books centred on nature for adults and children, but wants to help people who don’t read to embrace nature too. She recently launched the Encounter Nature mobile app, a guided digital nature journal. It allows users to create personal diary entries as they explore. A team of scientists at Kew Gardens have revealed their favourite specimens stored in its Fungarium. The Fungarium is home to 1.25 million dried fungus specimens. A fungus is a type of organism that gets its food from decaying material or other living things, and includes yeast, mushrooms and mould. The scientists want to celebrate the incredible variety of fungi and raise awareness of its uses (see panel). The Fungarium has several fungi that “attack” insects or spiders. Gibellula attenboroughii (named after naturalist David Attenborough) is a type of “zombie fungus” that spreads itself by infecting and then controlling spiders. A new project will help to restore a temperate rainforest at Glen Auldyn on the Isle of Man, an island in the Irish sea between England and Ireland. The scheme will be run by the environmental charity The Wildlife Trusts. Temperate rainforests were once found across Britain and Ireland, but now they cover less than 1% of the land. The only small areas of rainforest left on the Isle of Man are in the island’s glens (narrow valleys). Many of these are close to Glen Auldyn, which has just over three square kilometres of land suitable for a rainforest. To bring the rainforest back, volunteers will gather tree seeds from the glens and grow them in the Manx Wildlife Trust’s nursery. Once they’re big enough, the trees grown at the…

An unusual type of mould has found its way into at least 12 of Denmark’s most popular museums, including the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. The mould presents a threat to some of Denmark’s most important paintings and objects. There are more than 100,000 different types of mould, which is a type of fungus that spreads through spores (a bit like tiny seeds). Some moulds damage objects, human health and food, while other types have been turned into life-saving medicines (see panel). Experts say this particular species, known as Aspergillus restrictus, is an extreme form of mould. While mould usually flourishes in humid environments (where there is a lot of water vapour in the air), this species thrives in dry conditions. The mould was first spotted around 10 years…

One of Disney’s most mischievous characters, Stitch, is back from outer space to once again spread chaos in Hawaii. The film Lilo & Stitch is a live-action version of the classic 2002 animated movie of the same name. Live action means the characters are mostly played by real people (see panel below). In the film, an alien scientist creates Experiment 626, a creature that he believes can be used as a weapon. The creature escapes to Earth and lands in Hawaii, a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean. Herbs are named after herbaceous plants, a group that has soft, green stems rather than woody ones. However, most people now class a herb as any plant that can be used for food, flavouring or medicine. Popular herbs include rosemary, which is often used to flavour roast meats and vegetables; basil, which gets added to Italian dishes such as pizza and pasta; and coriander, which is used to flavour lots of Asian dishes. Welcome to a very mouldy issue of The Week Junior. It’s mouldy in a good way though, with a story about a Fungarium – like an aquarium but for fungi – that is home to more than one million species of fungus (p12), including mould that’s nearly 200 years old. The UK, France and Canada have condemned Israel’s latest attacks on Gaza. In a statement released on 19 May, the leaders of the three countries said they “strongly oppose” Israel’s actions. They have demanded that Israel stop its military operations and allow aid to reach people in Gaza. On 18 May, Israel’s army launched new attacks in Gaza – a strip of land bordering Israel and Egypt where many Palestinian people live. This is part of an ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, an armed group that governs Gaza. The situation became much worse on 7 October 2023 when Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people. On 19 May, the UK agreed a new deal with the European Union (EU), a group of 27 countries that work and trade together. The deal aims to reset the relationship between the UK and the EU after Brexit. What was Brexit? Brexit is a mixture of the words “Britain” and “exit”. It refers to when the UK left the EU on 31 January 2020. The UK first joined the European Economic Community (which later became the EU) in 1973. In 2016, there was a public vote over whether the UK should remain in the EU or leave. When it comes to racing against other top sprinters, 20-year-old Success Eduan has faith in her talent. “I am going to give my all and I’m going to pass them and I’m going to win,” she told BBC Sport. This positive attitude helped her at the recent World Relay Championships in Guangzhou, China, where she and three other sprinters claimed gold for Great Britain in the 4x100 metres relay race. Researchers at Kew are carrying out a project to sequence about 7,000 fungi samples in their collection. Sequencing is a process where scientists decode the building blocks of DNA (chemicals that instruct each cell in every living thing how to grow and look after itself). Scientists hope the project will help them learn more about fungi and discover new chemicals and medicines to help people. It is estimated there are about 2.5 million fungal species in the world but only about 155,000 have been officially recognised.…

Helmeted honeyeaters have returned to Cardinia in south-east Victoria, Australia, for the first time in 42 years. The birds disappeared from the area after bush fires. In 1928, a Scottish doctor called Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, a medicine that has saved over 500 million lives. He noticed that bacteria – tiny living things found in all natural environments – did not grow where a certain type of mould was spreading. This is because the mould, called Penicillium notatum, killed the bacteria. The mould was used to develop the medicine penicillin, which was used in the Second World War to treat soldiers with infected wounds by killing the bacteria. It continues to be used for all kinds of bacterial infections, including ear, chest, throat and skin problems. In 1945, Fleming was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, along with two other scientists.…

28 May 1959 Monkeys survive space mission 66 years ago, a seven-year-old rhesus monkey called Able and a one-year-old squirrel monkey called Baker completed a 16-minute-flight into space. They became the first animals to survive a space mission. The mission was carried out to find out how travelling into space might affect human bodies. Sea urchin eggs and fruit fly larvae were also included in the spacecraft. Animal rights’ activists opposed the flight because of failures in previous animal tests, such as Laika the dog’s death while orbiting Earth in 1957. The UK Government is currently working on the Bus Services Bill, which aims to give local councils in England more control over managing buses. The Liberal Democrat Party said that the Bill should be changed to include a complete ban on people playing music or videos out loud on public transport, because it’s disrespectful to everyone else who is travelling. Found across England and Wales in parks, gardens and woods, this pretty moth flits about on warm evenings from May to July. The lime hawk-moth has wavy-edged wings that can be up to eight centimetres across. They have patterns of pinky-beige, greyish-green and dark green, which makes it hard to see them among leaves or on tree bark. The moth is named after its love of lime trees. It doesn’t eat as an adult moth and only lives for about five weeks in order to mate. The females like to lay their eggs on lime trees’ heart-shaped leaves, as well as elm and London plane trees. Bananas A report by the charity Christian Aid says that the future of bananas is at risk from the effects of climate change. South America, Central America and the Caribbean supply 80% of the world’s bananas. Hundreds of years ago, alchemists dreamed of turning metals such as lead or copper into silver or gold. Now, scientists at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), near Geneva, Switzerland, have unexpectedly managed to do just that – although very briefly – during their experiments. The LHC is a powerful machine that makes particles (tiny bits of atoms, which are the building blocks of the universe) travel at high speeds. It is nearly 17 miles long and sits in a tunnel 100 metres underground. The machine is run by CERN, a European research organisation that studies the behaviour of particles. Twins Emily and Annabel Peaford have enjoyed playing golf together since they were very young. They are competitive on the golf course but also want to help each other improve.
