To mark National Numeracy Day on 21 May, The Week Junior spoke to artist, musician and writer Brook Tate, who is on a mission to make maths easier for everyone.
From a young age, Tate said he was “terrified” by maths, a subject that often made him feel stupid. Instead, he found a love of acting, art and music. Tate later realised that lots of everyday skills required maths. Then he saw a link between his creative work and maths, in the form of patterns. “So many creative practices, whether that’s music, art or dancing, use patterns; and I love patterns,” he said. As soon as Tate realised that maths was full of patterns, he began to love that too.
