On 1 January, the copyright for early versions of the cartoon characters Mickey and Minnie Mouse expired. Copyright is a legal right that stops someone’s work being used by other people. It can apply to all sorts of things that people create, such as music, books and films.
People are now free to use the versions of Mickey and Minnie Mouse from a short film called Steamboat Willie. Released in 1928, it introduced the characters to the public for the first time. Disney, the US company that made the film, owned the copyright for it. However, although copyright can last many years, it doesn’t go on forever. Nearly 100 years after it was created, the copyright on Steamboat Willie’s characters has finally run out.
