On 14 February, Yeva Skalietska celebrated her 12th birthday with balloons, birthday cake and a bowling party. Just 10 days later, she woke up to the sound of bombs. Russia had invaded her home country of Ukraine. Feeling afraid, Yeva took out a notebook with a heart on the cover. The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has released its Living Planet Report, which has found that the Earth’s wildlife populations have fallen by 69% in the last 50 years. The report is produced every two years to show how the natural world is changing so that governments, businesses and conservation understand what needs to be done to protect the Earth. The team measures a number of things including the Living Planet Index (LPI). This looks at how wildlife populations have changed over time. A total of 5,268 species across the world are tracked, including birds, fish, insects and mammals. The change in wildlife varies across the world. South America and the Caribbean were the most affected. In these areas the average wildlife populations have dropped by 94% over 50…

After years of old or broken fishing nets being dumped at sea or going to landfill, there is a new way to recycle them. Fishing nets are difficult to recycle because they are often made of different materials, mostly plastic, which means they don’t break down easily in nature. When they are dumped in the sea, they are dangerous because creatures such as seals and turtles can get tangled up in them. In the past, the only way to recycle nets was to send them to other European countries, where they were given proper specialist treatment. Now, a charity called Keep Britain Tidy has organised a project to recycle nets in the UK. It has worked with experts who know how to safely process the plastic and set up free…

This October is ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) awareness month. It’s a great time to learn, understand and start having conversations about the condition. After all, lots of young people in the UK have ADHD – around one in 20 – so you are quite likely to know someone who has it, or you might even have it yourself. What is ADHD? ADHD is a condition that affects the brain and behaviour. It was first mentioned 120 years ago by a famous British children’s doctor called Sir George Frederic Still. He noticed that some children couldn’t seem to control their behaviour in the same way as others. Dean Skivington from Dorset, England, injured his back in 2007 when he was playing rugby. It hurt a lot but then he read that cold water on the body can ease pain – and it worked for him. One thing annoyed him, though – sometimes he couldn’t get his shower cold enough. Now he has invented CryoShower, a small, portable unit that you connect to a shower or bath, which makes the water run super-cold. A red corridor lined with blinking animal eyes, a K-Pop-style boy band and a collection of colourful sacks dangling from the ceiling have gone on display at the Tate Liverpool gallery. They are part of the Turner Prize 2022 exhibition. The award is famous for sparking interesting debates around art and life. It’s that time of year when some of the best and biggest games get some special spooky updates for Halloween on 31 October. First, Pokémon Go is holding its own Halloween event for 2022. Players can use a new “Spooky Pose” and put Halloween-themed costumes on their characters. Mao Zedong founded the People’s Republic of China in 1949, after winning a long civil war (between people in the same country). Mao held great power over China, and his “Great Leap Forward” campaign (1958–1961) forced many of China’s people to work on huge farms to produce food. However, it led to millions dying from hunger. A tough and spiny shrub that grows to between one and eight metres tall, sea buckthorn lives on sand dunes. The plant grows wild along the east coast of England and the coast of Northern Ireland, but it is planted in other places too – often as a way of stopping sand dunes from collapsing. The bushes need lots of light (that’s why they like being where few other tall plants grow) and are very thorny. From late in the summer, thick clusters of pretty, small orange berries grow alongside its long, pointed silvery-grey leaves. Children in Chichester, England, took part in a new project that offered them the chance to make their own short films and watch them in their local cinema. Little People, Big Screen, was run by Chichester Cinema at New Park and STEM Innovation, which helps young people get into STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and maths. The programme invited people aged seven to 10 to go to workshops teaching the skills and technologies you need to make films. Zoe Bäckstedt won’t forget turning 18. The cyclist from Pontyclun, Wales, won the junior road race at the Road Cycling World Championships in Australia on her birthday last month. It was her second title in five days – she also won the junior time trial event. Bäckstedt is now a world champion in road cycling, indoor track cycling and cyclocross. The Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition is now on at the Natural History Museum in London, and online, until 2 July 2023, before it tours the UK and abroad. There are 100 photographs on display, all showing the beauty of planet Earth. The annual competition uses the power of photography to spread awareness of environmental issues and encourage a love of nature. This year, the museum received 38,575 entries from 93 countries. The photographers were judged by a panel of experts on their technical skill, how original their photo was, and the story behind it. The exhibition displays the photographs along with short videos, quotes from the judges and photographers, and comments from the museum’s scientists. Frankenweenie Disney+, DVD This black and white animation film was created by Tim Burton, the director behind The Nightmare Before Christmas. Young Victor Frankenstein, who is a bit of an outsider at school, is heartbroken when his dog Sparky dies. Five million UK adults are being asked to take part in one of the biggest health studies in the world. The “Our Future Health” project aims to find better ways to prevent illnesses and spot diseases earlier, to help people in future live healthier lives. At the moment, many diseases like cancer (a collection of diseases that causes cells, the building blocks of life, to behave oddly) are often only noticed after people become unwell. Scientists want to spot diseases sooner and learn how to treat them more successfully. Invitations to take part in the study will be sent this autumn. A fake, knitted speed camera has appeared by the side of a busy road in Cornwall, England. It has been designed to fool motorists who speed through the village of Trewoon, ignoring the speed limit of 30 miles per hour. Villagers say they have been asking for a speed camera for some time. Young people who are extremely gifted at a sport sometimes get spotted at a young age and put on the pathway to competing professionally. It is an exciting opportunity but requires a lot of dedication, with many hours of training before and after school and at weekends. Some take time off school; others leave their school and are tutored, so that lessons can fit around their sporting commitments. There are also special sport academies where elite young athletes can train as well as having school lessons. Have you ever wished you could snuggle down under your duvet and stay there for the whole winter, like a dormouse cosy in its nest? Well, it turns out that humans may be able to hibernate like dormice, after all – and it could be good for us.
