When Tiana-Rose Akoh-Arrey was a little girl, a boy in her class made a joke about her Afro hair. Tiana felt hurt and frustrated. That insult, however, inspired her to write a story about her hair and she hopes it will empower other young people to love who they are.
Tiana wrote My Afro: Twin Best Friends when she was seven. It tells the story of Tia and her best friend Aaoki, who has the same type of hair as hers, “while everyone else has straight, curly or silky hair.” In the book, characters Tia and Aaoki like to dress and style their hair the same, but Tiana’s own Afro hair can be hard to manage.
