When Tiana-Rose Akoh-Arrey was a little girl, a boy in her class made a joke about her Afro hair. Tiana felt hurt and frustrated. That insult, however, inspired her to write a story about her hair and she hopes it will empower other young people to love who they are. Tiana wrote My Afro: Twin Best Friends when she was seven. It tells the story of Tia and her best friend Aaoki, who has the same type of hair as hers, “while everyone else has straight, curly or silky hair.” In the book, characters Tia and Aaoki like to dress and style their hair the same, but Tiana’s own Afro hair can be hard to manage. A 20-year project to dig more ponds in a part of A Switzerland has caused an explosion in the number of amphibians (animals that live in water and on land). It boosted the populations of more than half of the endangered species of frogs, newts and toads. Across the world, amphibians have been in trouble for years because of habitat destruction, disease and invasive species (species that come from somewhere else and take over). In Aargau in Switzerland, amphibians couldn’t live in some ponds because they were too small and had too many predators. In 1999, the situation facing amphibians – in particular the European tree frog – was so bad that people decided to create new ponds to give them more space to thrive. New research has shown that gorillas and chimpanzees can be friends. In a forest in the Republic of the Congo, in central Africa, researchers from Washington University in the US studied the animals for 21 years. In that time they noted 285 interactions between chimps and gorillas – some lasting for several hours. The apes spent most of their time eating together, chasing each other, wrestling and play-fighting. Often, interactions occurred when a group of chimpanzees found a good meal and their excited noises attracted a family of gorillas. In 34% of the encounters, the animals went on to eat or look for different foods together. Some friendships lasted for years, with apes going straight to their friend whenever two groups met. More than 1,000 Paddington Bears and other teddies, which were left by members of the public as a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, are being donated to a children’s charity called Barnardo’s. Alaska, US “Bear force one” crowned fattest bear On 11 October, the winner of the 2022 Fat Bear Week was announced. This is an annual contest when people vote for the fattest bear at Alaska’s Katmai National Park. Bears eat a lot to gain weight before they hibernate in winter. People have been paying their respects to Robbie Coltrane, who has died at the age of 72. Visitors to an arts venue in Glasgow, Scotland, now have the perfect reason to keep dancing as hard as they can – they’re creating renewable energy. The venue, which is called SWG3, has launched a system that uses the heat produced by dancing as a source of energy. The more energetically people dance, the more heat they create. Devices on the ceiling absorb heat from inside the club and transport it through pipes using a special type of liquid called a carrier fluid. The heat energy travels into 12 holes drilled into the ground to be stored 200 metres below. On 22 October, the Children’s Country House – designed by children especially for young people – opens to the public. The house is owned by the National Trust, a charity that looks after important old buildings, intriguing objects from the past and areas of nature. On 16 October, the National Congress of the Communist Party of China began in Beijing. The congress is a meeting of China’s ruling political party. It is held to choose China’s new leaders and is due to finish on 23 October. The party leader is one of around 370 positions that will be chosen during the congress by around 2,300 senior party members. Manners have developed over thousands of years and are always changing. Around 100 years ago, children in the UK weren’t allowed to speak unless an adult spoke to them first. Now young people can make their voices heard in places like school councils and climate protests. Manners also mean different things in different countries. Somalia, in East Africa, is experiencing its worst drought (long period without rain) in 40 years, which is harming crops and causing hunger. Many people have died. Lots of charities are working hard to raise money to help the people of Somalia, and you can do your bit too. Ideas include selling old toys or books; doing a bake sale; asking your friends and family to sponsor you to run or hike a certain distance; or offering to do a task for a neighbour such as raking up leaves in exchange for a charity donation (make sure you get a parent or guardian’s permission first, though).
