Part of Liz Truss’s energy plan is to remove the ban on fracking. This is a way of getting energy by drilling deep underground to break up a rock called shale and extract the gas inside it. Many people are against fracking because it can cause earth tremors (small earthquakes). Also, shale gas is a fossil fuel, so using it will add to climate change (long-term changes in world weather patterns). Someone working near the airport had seen the cat, so he was reunited with his happy owner. A GRANDMOTHER WHO LOVES TO RUN An 84-year-old granny from Greater Manchester, England, achieved a personal best for running six miles in one hour and 30 minutes. Elliot Garcia is a nine-year-old actor. He also has autism. The condition affects the way the brain develops and can change how someone experiences the world. For Elliot, it means he sometimes appears shy, finds new situations difficult and dislikes loud noises. Despite there being more than 700,000 autistic people in the UK, there are very few autistic characters on TV, so when Elliot was asked to play a part through the National Autistic Society (NAS), he jumped at the chance. “It was like a dream,” says Elliot. If you think it was just humans who felt odd during lockdown, think again. A new study has revealed that some primates (baboons, bonobos, chimpanzees and gorillas) were more antisocial, lazy and aggressive than usual during the lockdown months. The study took place in Twycross Zoo and Knowsley Safari Park in England. It compared the primates’ behaviour during periods of lockdown in 2020 and 2021 – when the zoo was closed and they were not being observed by humans – with how they acted after zoo visitors returned. When the zoo was closed, some primates spent more time alone and moved about less. When the sites reopened and visitors returned, bonobos and gorillas spent less time alone, gorillas spent less time resting and chimpanzees ate more and explored their enclosures…

The Government has announced that it will help with projects by farmers and landowners to restore (bring back) nature in 22 areas across England. The projects include creating a corridor for wildlife around the River Holme in Yorkshire, and restoring water meadows in the Cotswolds. The projects should increase the biodiversity (the variety of plants and animals living in a particular habitat). It is hoped the projects could improve food production as well. Animals show affection by coming up for a scratch or a stroke, or just sitting with you. I used to work with sealions, who would come and sit with us all the time. Ukrainian military forces have taken back large areas of land in eastern Ukraine that had been occupied by the Russian army, including territory around Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said, “From the beginning of September until today, our warriors have already liberated more than 6,000 square kilometres of the territory of Ukraine.” Ukrainian troops are believed to have taken villages, towns and cities back from Russian control, including the town of Izium, from where lots of supplies were being sent on to Russian soldiers. A penguin Lucas the African penguin, in San Diego Zoo in the US, has been given special boots to help him walk. Platypus Severe floods in Queensland, a state in Australia, are thought to have wiped out some populations of platypus. Narrated by Sir David Attenborough, it took four and a half years to film and shows some of the Earth’s coldest, remotest places, including the North and South Poles. New technology used includes microscopes to film ice cracking under a baby emperor penguin’s feet. The programme also shows ice melting, seen from space. Cancer Research UK for Children & Young People This Childhood Cancer Awareness month, Cancer Research UK for Children & Young People are trying to help more young people survive cancer. The charity works with researchers across the UK to develop new treatments, with fewer long-term side effects for young patients. It can live for well over 500 years – the Major oak in Sherwood Forest, England, is thought to be more than 800 years old. Oak leaves are about 10 centimetres long with a curly outline. The tree has yellow hanging catkins (long strings of flowers). At this time of year, oaks start to shed their fruit, called acorns. Scientists in Zimbabwe have discovered the bones of the oldest dinosaur ever found in Africa. Mbiresaurus raathi, which lived more than 230 million years ago, was first uncovered on an expedition to the Zambezi Valley in Zimbabwe in 2017. Christopher Griffin, who led the expedition, said he found a femur (thigh bone) sticking out of the ground, so he dug around it and found a hip bone. “I kept digging, got more of the team to help out, and we recovered nearly the entire skeleton,” he says. As the skeleton is almost complete – only part of its skull and some of its hand are missing – scientists have learnt a lot about the dinosaur and its life beside an ancient river. This Autumn, the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) will be touring England to perform its “First Encounters with Shakespeare” production of Twelfth Night in schools and theatres. From 20 September to 12 November, the RSC will visit 13 places with the show, which is designed to bring Shakespeare to those who have never seen his plays live – especially younger audiences and people who don’t often get the chance to go to the theatre. The company will be putting on the show in cities including Birmingham, Hull and Middlesbrough, as well as in smaller towns in counties including Cumbria, Durham and Suffolk. If you’ve played the mobile game Pokémon Go, you’ll know that its monsters can be found wherever you walk. Now the technology behind that game is being used for a new app from the Science Museum. It’s called Wonderlab AR and is free to download from the app stores on Apple and Android devices. The aim is to encourage people to get outside and learn about the science in our everyday environment – from traffic lights and electric car charging points to cashpoints, telephones and even toilets. Instead of catching monsters, in this game you’re looking for “discoveries” (as the app calls them) from different fields of science: including electricity, forces, light, maths and sound.
