Elizabeth II’s early life
Elizabeth was born on 21 April 1926. When her uncle, King Edward VIII, abdicated (stepped down from the throne), her father became King George VI. Elizabeth was the elder of the new King’s two daughters so she became heir to the throne.
A royal wedding
Elizabeth married Philip Mountbatten at Westminster Abbey on 20 November 1947. On the day before their wedding, Philip was given a number of royal titles, including Duke of Edinburgh.
Coronation
After the death of her father, King George VI, in 1952, Elizabeth became Queen at the age of 25. Her coronation took place on 2 June 1953.
