A sanctuary in Liberia, west Africa, is looking after pangolins, an unusual and endangered species. Liberia has the most forest of any country in west Africa, so it is very biodiverse (a large variety of plants and animal live there). The country is home to a quarter of all mammal species in Africa, including three of the world’s eight species of pangolin. Thanks to their odd appearance, pangolins are sometimes mistaken for reptiles but they are actually the world’s only scaly-skinned mammals. They live in parts of Africa and Asia and are some of the world’s most trafficked (caught and sold illegally) animals. A team of scientists were caught by surprise recently when they spotted an unusual creature near the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, and they are now wondering if it was a new species. The scientists were carrying out research on board the E/V Nautilus, a ship used by the Ocean Exploration Trust, which is an organisation that searches for new discoveries in the world’s seas. The team had released a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) named Hercules to explore the sea bed. Equipped with a camera, Hercules can be controlled from the ship and show the team what is happening deep below the surface. When Fatmata Binta fled from a war in Sierra Leone, west Africa, when she was a girl, her family and the people they were with didn’t have enough to eat. That experience taught Fatmata to save, share and be resourceful with food. Now, 20 years later, she is a chef in Ghana and has become the first person from Africa to win the Basque Culinary World Prize, a top cooking award. Featuring the world’s top female cyclists, the Tour de France Femmes returned this July. After eight days of racing on roads around France, the Tour finished on 31 July with Annemiek van Vleuten from the Netherlands being crowned champion. The men’s Tour de France has taken place for more than 100 years, but the women’s Tour isn’t as famous or frequent. In fact, the last race was 33 years ago in 1989. A new exhibition called Enchanted Journeys: Adventures in Storytelling is offering visitors a chance to get right inside some of the stories they love from the MinaLima Classics children’s book series. The show features brilliant artworks from the books and it’s open now at Moat Brae, Scotland’s National Centre for Children’s Literature and Storytelling, in Dumfries. MinaLima Classics are beautifully illustrated hardback books with interactive pop-outs. The school of slime New York, in the US, has many attractions: the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building… and a space dedicated to all things slime. At the Sloomoo Institute, visitors can decorate a huge slime wall, jump into a slime lake and explore a glow-in-the-dark slime cave. It was set up in 2019 by friends Sara Schiller and Karen Robinowitz, who found that slime really helped them feel good. On 30 July, Nichelle Nichols died at the age of 89. She was one of the first black women in the US to play a character on TV who had the right to give other people orders. Nichols was in the original Star Trek series, which started in 1966, where she played Lieutenant Nyota Uhura, a communications officer on the star ship USS Enterprise. Star Trek challenged stereotypes (too-simple and fixed beliefs about certain types of people) by featuring ethnic-minority actors playing important characters. Hosepipe bans have come into force in the Isle of Man, the Isle of Wight and Hampshire, England, with Kent and Sussex, also in England, to follow on 12 August. This is because parts of the country face a possible drought (a shortage of water) caused by the recent hot weather and a lack of rainfall. What is a hosepipe ban? This is a rule that says private households have to limit or stop their use of hosepipes. Bans are brought in to save water. Many cities in the world, from Rio de Janeiro to New Delhi, Kinshasa to London, are full of traffic jams – but it hasn’t always been this way. Before the 1950s, cars were rare in the UK and drivers would always need to keep an eye out for pedestrians (people on foot). Some people have suggested cities should return to this way of living, or go even further and ban cars from cities completely. It would require a big change in the way cities are organised. Roads could be used differently, to free up space for cyclists and pedestrians to move around; for children and young people to play; and for restaurants and cafés to have outdoor seating. Harrison, who is from Liverpool, England, sat his GCSE chemistry exam in the morning before playing at a concert before the Champions League final in Paris, France, in the evening. A campaign to improve water quality at Scottish beaches has been criticised by bird experts for unfairly blaming seagulls. A campaign called “My Beach Your Beach”, which is run by the charity Keep Scotland Beautiful, warned seaside visitors not to feed gulls because their droppings pollute the water. Ornithologists (people who study birds) have accused the campaign of wrongly blaming seagulls, when it’s humans who pollute the sea. Dr Viola Ross-Smith, a gull expert from the British Trust for Ornithology, said gull poo is natural and harmless, compared with plastic or human sewage. “Our seas are full of poos from all kinds of seabirds and fish,” she said. Russia has announced that it wants to leave the International Space Station (ISS). The country said it would leave in 2028, when it hopes to have built its own space station. Several countries use the ISS to carry out research in space. The station was first planned in the 1980s, and US and Russia began to build it in 1993. Later, Canada, Japan and the European Space Agency joined the project. The station has been in orbit since 1998. It is actually approved to operate until 2024, but the US and Russia had been discussing whether to keep it open until 2030.
