One person who knows that well is Finley Hassall, an 11-year-old who helped to save the life of a boy while he was bodyboarding on holiday in Cornwall. “I was able to stay calm, as I was confident in what I was doing,” he tells The Week Junior. This summer, you could help save butterflies and moths by doing an important but simple job: counting them. The wildlife charity Butterfly Conservation revealed in May that half of the UK’s remaining butterfly species are at risk of going extinct. That’s why the team want as many people as possible to take part in this year’s Big Butterfly Count, giving scientists the information they need to protect these beautiful insects. The Big Butterfly Count is open to anyone of any age, no matter where in the country you live. Since it was launched in 2010, it has become the biggest survey of butterflies anywhere in the world. Scientists have released the first images taken by the telescope with the most ambitious mission in history. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a joint project of the US space agency, NASA, the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency. After 30 years of planning, construction and testing, it was launched on Christmas Day 2021 into an orbit about a million miles from Earth. JWST’s huge light-collecting mirror, which is 6.5 metres across, is so big that it had to be split into 18 hexagonal segments and folded up for launch. Seal mysteriously far from sea A baby seal was found by an Australian farmer two miles from the sea and 50 miles from the nearest seal colony. Ty Kayden came across the tiny pup – about 90 centimetres long – sitting beside his wheat and looking skinny. In May, almost 250,000 people recorded their plastic waste over one week. The Big Plastic Count was organised by Greenpeace and Everyday Plastic, and they have now revealed the results. They found that UK households throw away nearly 100 billion pieces of plastic packaging a year, mostly from food and drink, and just 12% of it is being recycled. Greenpeace said the findings show that “recycling is not enough” and the solution is to stop relying on so much plastic.…

Three sisters from Hull, England, hope to inspire others with their skateboarding skills. After their mum showed them a video of British skateboard champion Sky Brown, aged 14, doing flicks and tricks, the girls wanted to try out some moves. Now Amaya, nine, Maysa, 11, and Layna, who is aged 12, love it. Amaya says, “It’s fun going down the ramps and having races.” The sisters post videos of themselves practising tricks and rapping on social media, and have thousands of followers. The broad leafy dome of a common beech can provide welcome summer shade for humans and wildlife. Growing up to 40 metres tall and living for 250 years or more, these beautiful trees are widespread across most of the UK. The hit TV show The Great British Bake Off has been made into a new musical comedy for the stage. Great British Bake Off: The Musical follows the format of the TV series, featuring baker contestants, two judges and two presenters. The show was created by Love Productions and is on stage in Cheltenham, England. The story follows the challenges and triumphs of the contestants, and some of the events are based on actual experiences from the TV show over the years.
