CBBC shows like Horrible Histories, The Sarah Jane Adventures and Blue Peter have entertained and informed millions of young people in the UK, but in a few years they will only be available online. The head of the BBC, Tim Davie, has announced that CBBC and some other channels will be removed from live TV. He said that the changes would help the BBC adapt to the digital streaming age. It will also be cheaper, and the BBC needs to save money. Despite their name, the large trees known as limes or linden trees have nothing to do with the tasty green citrus fruit. Various species grow in parks across the UK, providing a thick canopy of shade from the summer sun. Wild woodland limes were also once common but are now quite rare. For most of the year, limes can be easily identified by their heart-shaped leaves with saw-toothed edges. In June and July, five-petalled flowers produce a honey-like scent. These attract insects, such as pollinators and sap-sucking aphids and their predators. Anything lying below the tree in summer may pick up a sticky coating that you might think is sap or nectar. A new exhibition is telling the stories of intelligence operations in the Second World War. The Intelligence Factory is at Bletchley Park in the English town of Milton Keynes, and will explore Bletchely’s famous codebreakers. These were people who helped read messages the Nazis sent to each other during the Second World War, which were “coded” (written with a secret meaning). Their work was very important as it helped save many soldiers from Nazi attacks, which the codebreakers found out about before they happened. The exhibition is in Block A, an area of Bletchley Park that has never before been opened to the public. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and Scouts Cymru (the Welsh branch of the Scouts) have launched a Water Safety Awareness Badge. The badge makes young people aware of the dangers of water and teaches them water safety skills. It will be introduced to Scout groups across Wales, and the aim is to reach 14,000 children. New Zealand scientists have found life thriving in one of Earth’s most hostile environments – a thick sheet of floating ice off the edge of Antarctica. Professor Huw Horgan from the Victoria University of Wellington was studying satellite images of the enormous Ross Ice Shelf when he noticed a groove running across its surface. Have you ever found yourself fretting over whether you got the right answer in a test while others around you are racing ahead? Take heart: people who are generally more confident about decisions are no more likely to be right than those who are less certain, according to a new study. Researchers in Poland asked 723 volunteers to say how decisive they were in various everyday situations. The most and least confident then took some more tests. These included tasks such as deciding whether a pattern of dots was drifting to the right or left, and looking at fuzzy pictures and deciding whether each showed a house or a face. Fall Guys was a big hit with players when the game first came out in 2020 for the PlayStation 4 console and PCs. A newly discovered type of virus could play an important role in the ocean’s ability to take planet-warming carbon out of the atmosphere. The tiny plants and animals that live in the sea, called plankton, take carbon out of the air just like trees and plants on land. The newly discovered viruses, which infect plankton and change their function, could play a vital role in this process. Marine plankton draw carbon dioxide gas out of the atmosphere at the sea surface and lock it away by falling to the deep sea floor when they die.
