Exploration starts with climbing a tree, British adventurer Lucy Shepherd tells The Week Junior. Shepherd, aged 29, has recently completed a 250-mile expedition through the rainforests of the Kanuku mountains in Guyana, South America, a route that no one has taken before. However, she says tree climbing is something almost anyone can do and is a brilliant way into the world of adventure.
Shepherd’s first expedition was a 10-week trip to the Arctic when she was 18. “I didn’t want it to be a once-in-a-lifetime thing,” she says, so she started learning skills and talking to professional explorers. “The word Kanuku filled me with excitement, along with the legends that people tell about the mountains,” Shepherd says.
