Scientists have identified what they say is the world’s deepest known earthquake. It took place 467 miles below the surface of the Earth, at a depth where quakes were thought to be impossible. The 2015 tremor happened beneath the Bonin Islands in southern Japan. Earthquakes occur when the slow moving rocky plates that make up Earth’s outer crust jam together and then suddenly shift – breaking rocks and sending out waves of energy. They are most common in areas where plates meet each other. The Bonin Islands lie on top of one of these boundaries, where one plate is being pushed underneath another, making the islands prone to both earthquakes and volcanoes. I spent Remembrance Sunday this year in the small Cornish fishing village of St Mawes, on the southern coast of Cornwall. As the clocks struck 11am, a small congregation met outside in the chilly air to pause in silence and sing hymns to remember all those who have died in conflicts. Down the road, the Roseland Gig Rowing Club raised the huge oars of their rowing boats in the air as a mark of respect, before heading out onto the water. Former cricketer Azeem Rafiq has spoken to Members of Parliament (MPs) about the racism he experienced while playing for Yorkshire County Cricket Club. Racism is when people are treated badly or unfairly because of their skin colour, culture or nationality. Who is Azeem Rafiq? Azeem Rafiq was a cricketer who played for Yorkshire County Cricket Club from 2008–2014 and 2016–2018. In 2012, he became the first cricketer of Asian origin to captain the team. He also captained the England Under-17s and Under-19s. What did he say? While playing for Yorkshire, Rafiq says he suffered racist language and bullying. “Sometimes it might look like nothing’s happening but, if you keep going, you could get opportunities out of the blue,” illustrator Selom Sunu tells The Week Junior. “So don’t give up.” Sunu’s path to becoming an illustrator was a long one. He gave up drawing after college and didn’t draw for eight years. Then, one day, he came up with an idea for a book. When he was younger, Sunu went to school for a while in Ghana, west Africa. He remembered there were not many books with Ghanaian children in them, so he wanted to create his own book and illustrate it. “It is important to draw everyone so everyone feels included,” Sunu says. Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Panama have agreed to create a huge joint marine reserve around the coasts of their countries. The zone will span 200,000 square miles of the Pacific Ocean in an area that is an important route for long-distance wildlife migrations. These are annual journeys made by many sea creatures, including sharks, stingrays, turtles and whales, to move between feeding grounds or to breed. The leaders of the four countries announced their plan to create the Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor (CMAR) at the COP26 environmental summit in Glasgow, Scotland. There will be a ban on commercial fishing within the zone, as well as moves to stop illegal fishing by local communities. The men’s football World Cup doesn’t kick off until November 2022 but lots of countries recently booked their spot at the competition. England beat Albania 5-0 and San Marino 10-0 to get the points they needed in qualifying games to reach the World Cup finals, which will be held in the small Middle Eastern country of Qatar. Scotland’s 2-0 win against Moldova gave them a World Cup play-off place, and Wales have also secured a play-off spot. The play-offs for European teams will be in March 2022. The three countries that win their semi-final and final in the play-offs get a place at the World Cup finals. Northern Ireland failed to qualify automatically or reach the play-offs. Christmas is coming, and Windsor Great Park is aglow for the festive season. A light show is illuminating the historic park and grounds of Windsor Castle, including its ancient woodlands. The park itself in Windsor, England, dates back nearly 1,000 years to the 11th century. In 1066, William the Conqueror invaded England and built a castle there. The outer walls of Windsor Castle, where the Queen still lives some of the time, were built during William’s reign, and some of the oak trees in the grounds were planted at that time. Châtellerault, France Hot-air balloon record is broken On 10 November, Rémi Ouvrard broke the world record for standing on top of a hot-air balloon at an altitude of 4,016 metres – that’s nearly two and a half miles above the ground. He raised money for research into diseases that affect the brain and muscles. Ouvrard stayed on top of the balloon, piloted by his father, for an hour and a half. When Musa Motha was 10 years old, he was diagnosed with a type of bone disease in his leg. The doctors had to amputate (surgically remove) the leg, and Motha’s life changed for ever. Before then, he had loved playing football near his home in Johannesburg, South Africa. Motha, now 26, did not let his leg amputation stop his activity. At a party one night, he started to dance. “I danced the whole night,” he told CNN TV news channel. His talent developed and Motha has appeared in music videos, as well as several adverts. His moves include using a crutch as a leg to lift his body up into dance shapes.…

As winter draws in, some ladybirds and butterflies like to come indoors to avoid the harsh weather. The small tortoiseshell and peacock butterflies will often come indoors, as will the two spot ladybird. They will try to find somewhere cool and dry to spend the winter in a state of sleep-like inactivity called dormancy but when heating is turned on, they might wake up and start flying around. The best thing for these insects is to carefully catch them and take them somewhere safe outside, where they can resume their winter nap.
