World’s longest race round the block
On 17 October, Andrea Marcato won the world’s longest official foot race. Known as the Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3,100 Mile, the race sees participants run around the same half-mile block in Queens, New York, 5,649 times. The race began on 5 September and Marcato, from Italy, finished the 3,100 miles in 43 days.

Huge plant and flower survey finished
After 39 years the final entry into a book cataloguing all the plants and flowers on the Iberian peninsula (the land mainly occupied by the countries of Portugal and Spain) has been completed. More than 250 scientists worked on the Flora ibérica encyclopedia. It lists 6,120 species, 22% of which do not grow anywhere else in the world.
