New rose honours gardener John Ystumllyn, the UK’s first known black gardener, has inspired the name of a new breed of yellow rose, the John Ystumllyn rose. It is thought to be the first rose named after a person of colour from the UK. Ystumllyn was brought to north Wales as a young boy from west Africa in the 1740s. He worked as a servant for the Wynn family of Ystumllyn and was named after their estate. Ystumllyn learned about plants and later became a respected gardener. He was one of four passengers on board billionaire Jeff Bezos’ rocket capsule, called New Shepard. It is the second time the capsule has successfully launched tourists into space. I think it’s the okapi. Okapis are the only living relative of giraffes. They live in tropical rainforests of the Democratic Republic of Congo, in Africa. Their hair is chestnut brown and very oily, to keep their skin dry in the humid forests. Scientists have used trapped radiation from a storm on the Sun to show that Vikings were building a settlement in North America in 1021 AD – exactly one thousand years ago. The Vikings were warriors from modern-day Denmark, Norway and Sweden, who invaded other countries in Europe by sea during the 9th to 11th centuries. Historians have been sure that they crossed the Atlantic ever since the 1960 discovery of an ancient Viking village known as L’Anse aux Meadows, in Newfoundland, Canada. However, the village’s exact age remained uncertain. A group of jaguars in a swampy area of Brazil eat more fish than land animals, and are happy to socialise and play together, according to a new study. They are the first wild jaguar population known to feed on large amounts of fish. Researchers from Oregon State University, in the US, worked with Brazilian colleagues to study a population of wild jaguars in the Brazilian Pantanal. The Pantanal is a low-lying region of Brazil where water runs off nearby mountains to create swamps and marshes. It is the world’s largest freshwater wetland habitat, but wildlife in the area can be hard to study because it has few roads. Earlier this month, more than 200 conker players took part in the World Conker Championships in the village of Southwick, in Northamptonshire, England. Conkers are seeds found in green spiky cases on horse chestnut trees. They fall from the trees around September and October. At the World Conker Championships, two players compete against each other. Each has a conker with a hole through it that is attached to some string. A player holds their conker out and their opponent has three attempts to swing at it using their own conker on string. When Maurice Flitcroft played in the Open Championship in Scotland in 1976, he set the highest score on record of 121. The wildlife charity WWF and the British Antarctic Survey are recruiting walrus detectives, and they hope that you can join in. They want people to help them search for Atlantic and Laptev walruses in the Arctic region – but don’t worry, you can do it from the warmth and comfort of your own home. Researchers at the Walrus from Space project hope that thousands of people will help them search through their huge collection of satellite images looking for walruses. The idea is to track the number of walruses in the Arctic over a five-year period to see how the population is changing over time. Engineers in the US have created a swarm of robots that are capable of working together to overcome obstacles. “When ants collect or transport objects, if one comes upon an obstacle, the group works collectively to overcome that obstacle,” explained Dr Yasemin Ozkan-Aydin of the University of Notre Dame, who led the research. “If there’s a gap in the path, for example, they will form a bridge so the other ants can travel across – and that is the inspiration for this study.” Ozkan-Aydin and her colleagues 3D-printed a swarm of four-legged robots, measuring 15-20cm in length.
