An ancient fast-food restaurant, preserved in the ashes of Pompeii, has opened to the public. Pompeii was an ancient city in southern Italy that was covered in ash after the nearby volcano Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD79. Since its rediscovery about 250 years ago, many of its ruins have been dug out by archaeologists – experts who study the past from man-made objects often dug up at ancient sites. The “thermopolium” (Latin for “hot-drink counter”) was unearthed in 2019. It was a place where hot food and drink was sold – an ancient equivalent of today’s fast-food restaurants. The UK gets all sorts of weather: sunny summer days, windy and wet autumn conditions and frost and snow in winter. The weather around the UK changes too; the north of Scotland is usually cooler than southern England, for example. A weather station and weather equipment helps you understand, record and forecast what’s happening in the skies and atmosphere around you. Some schools may have an automatic weather station. This has equipment, like a wind vane and sensors, attached to a pole on a building. They were invented by Shigetaka Kurita in 1999. • New emojis are introduced every year by an organisation called the Unicode Consortium. In September, it will decide on a new set of emojis, which could include a salute and a disco ball. • A recent report in the Wall Street Journal pointed out that people from different age groups interpreted the smiley face emoji in different ways. A prehistoric pterosaur discovered in Australia has been described as the “closest thing to a real life dragon”. Pterosaurs were flying reptiles that lived during the age of the dinosaurs. They once lived on every continent but the new species is just the fourth to be found in Australia – and the largest so far. The find came to light in June 2011, when part of a jawbone was found by Len Shaw, a council worker in north-west Queensland who enjoyed hunting for fossils (the preserved remains of prehistoric life) during his lunch breaks. Shaw contacted a local museum and since then the remains have been studied by researchers led by Tim Richards from the University of Queensland. Europe’s tallest active volcano, Mount Etna in Sicily, Italy, has just got even taller. The volcano’s southeastern crater is now 3,357 metres above sea level, which is the tallest the volcano has ever been. The new height was announced by Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology on 10 August. For the past 40 years, the northeastern crater was the tallest part of the volcano. It measured 3,350 metres above sea level after an eruption in 1981, before shrinking to 3,326 metres in 2018. This was after the edges of the crater had collapsed. Mount Etna has four summit craters. Etna’s height changes because of volcanic eruptions. “Etna changes continuously, it’s her nature,” said Stefano Branca, who is the director of the Etna Observatory. Author Jasbinder Bilan was born on a farm in India, near the Himalayan mountains. There, she lived with her brothers, sisters and all her extended family, as well as “a grumpy camel and a dear monkey called Oma,” she tells The Week Junior, ahead of the release of her new book Aarti and the Blue Gods. When Bilan was 18 months old, her family moved to Nottingham, in England. Her grandmother, whom she calls her Majee, would tell them stories of Oma and the farm. The behaviour of humpback whales changed as seas became quieter in the pandemic, according to new research. Christine Gabriele from the US National Park Service (NPS) and Michelle Fournet, from Cornell University in the US, found that with fewer boats in the area, whales on the north-west Pacific coast changed their habits. Glacier Bay in the US state of Alaska is home to all sorts of creatures including bears, birds, dolphins, sea otters and seals. In summer months, humpback whales migrate north to feed in these waters. For around 35 years, NPS researchers have collected information on these seasonal visitors, counting how many come and identifying individuals that return each year. The remains of a 28,000-year-old cave lion cub discovered in Siberia, Russia, are in such good condition that her fur, skin, whiskers and teeth are all still intact. The cub, named Sparta, was found in permafrost – ground that has stayed frozen for many years – and researchers say that she is the best preserved ice age animal ever found. Cave lions are relatives of today’s African lions that adapted to live in colder climates during the last ice age, and grew significantly bigger than modern lions. It is thought that Sparta was one to two months old when she died.…

When she was 15, Malala Yousafzai was shot for speaking out against a ban on girls going to school by an extreme group that controlled her town in Pakistan. She survived the attack and was flown to the UK to recover, where she lives with her family. Yousafzai never gave up hope of returning to school. On 15 August, celebrities from around the world, including Ed Sheeran, gath ed r a virtual event to raise money for Covid-19 relief work in India. The three-hour fundraiser, which was live-streamed on Facebook, was called We for India: Saving Lives, Protecting Livelihoods. Vahan Mikaelyan, from Russia, calls the car the “Dragon” and has shared a video of the vehicle launching flames out of the front of the car.
