“I was always super passionate about helping people,” 15-year-old scientist and inventor Gitanjali Rao tells The Week Junior Science + Nature magazine. “And once I started to get involved in science, that’s when I started to use science to solve problems.“ Rao’s drive to help people led to her being named Time magazine’s first ever Kid of the Year in 2020. Wild giant pandas should no longer be classified as endangered, according to Chinese officials. With around 1,800 of the animals now living in the wild, their conservation status can be classed as “vulnerable”. Although an internationally recognised list took pandas out of the “endangered” zone in 2016, Chinese conservationists said that that decision had been made too soon. Pandas once lived across south-east Asia in countries such as Vietnam and Myanmar, but today they only survive in a few Chinese mountain ranges. Here, they are considered a national treasure and held in such high regard that they have been compared to a Chinese equivalent of the UK’s royal family. Tank taxi service is a huge hit Merlin Batchelor from Norwich, England, has bought an old 1960s army tank and turned it into a unique taxi service, called Tank Taxi. Batchelor spent £20,000 buying and refurbishing the vehicle – an FV432 armoured personnel carrier – and he now offers people transport to events such as proms and weddings, as well as city tours. The tank has also proved to be practical for Batchelor and his family. He has used it to go to the shops and visit his local park. The next step is to take the tank on the school run. What does it take for a book to absorb a reader into its world? Some people are gripped by a thrilling plot. Others want to put themselves in a character’s place, feeling what they feel, thinking what they think. For some, an alternate reality that looks nothing like the life they know is what appeals. There are so many different genres of literature, and each has its own magic – so much so that it doesn’t matter what age group a book is written for. If someone enjoys it when they are nine years old, they can keep rereading it long after they’ve grown up. “Rapa Nui children learn to walk just so that they can dance and speak and sing,” Mahani Teave told the BBC. Teave grew up on Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island, in the Pacific Ocean. She is a classical pianist who has won several awards and played all over the world. Rapa Nui is the most isolated island in the world that has people living on it. “I always felt that there should be a music school on the island,” she said, so in 2016 Teave co-founded the Toki Foundation to teach music to young people from the island. On 21 July, an exciting new cricket competition called The Hundred begins. Manchester Originals, Northern Superchargers (based in Leeds), Birmingham Phoenix, Trent Rockets (Nottingham), Welsh Fire (Cardiff), Oval Invincibles (London), London Spirit and Southern Brave (Southampton) are the eight teams taking part. Last year, I spoke to the England manager Gareth Southgate for an interview with The Week Junior. We talked about the upcoming European Championships and Marcus Rashford’s campaign to make sure that children still received free school meals during the holidays. Southgate said, “It’s possible, I think, to be a very good footballer but also have an impact in other areas, and Marcus has done that absolutely brilliantly.” Rashford was one of three England players to miss a penalty in the shootout that decided the Euro 2020 final, but he remains a great footballer and an even greater person. Anew pizza chef at a Paris restaurant can make up 80 pizzas in an hour – thanks to its three arms. The chef is a robot called Pazzi, which is fitted with one arm for rolling out dough, another for spreading tomato sauce and a third for sprinkling toppings, just like a human chef would do. If you like watching different types of aircraft in the sky and fancy taking a close-up look at some of those planes on the ground, you’ll enjoy an airshow. Airshows are organised events where planes and helicopters are on display. Some of them perform stunts and acrobatic moves, flying low to the ground, their loud engines adding to the thrill. You can take some fantastic pictures and videos to remember it.
