President Joe Biden has promised that the US will cut its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in half by 2030. CO2 is released into the atmosphere as a result of human activity, for example by burning fossil fuels like gas, coal and oil. Too much CO2 and other harmful gases trap heat in the atmosphere, leading to global warming, which damages the environment. Biden said that failing to tackle global warming would lead to more “fires, floods, droughts, heatwaves and hurricanes”.
