On 12 April, events were held across Russia to celebrate 60 years since Yuri Gagarin became the first person in space.
Gagarin was a cosmonaut (Russian astronaut) for the Soviet Union (a group of countries that were once ruled from Moscow, the capital of Russia). During the mid-20th century, the Soviet Union was in a “space race” with the US. Gagarin’s flight, on 12 April 1961, was a huge victory for the Soviet Union.
To mark the 60th anniversary, rockets were launched in the city of St Petersburg and there were celebrations across Russia. The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, visited a monument to Gagarin in the city of Engels, which is close to where he landed upon his return to Earth.
