After nearly 10 years of writing the award-winning Tom Gates series, Liz Pichon has created a brand new book called Shoe Wars, out on 15 October. It features never-before-seen characters and takes place in a world based on footwear. Pichon tells The Week Junior that the idea of writing about shoes came from her visits to schools. “I would draw on my shoes so the children sitting on the floor during assembly could see them and spot the different characters,” she says. Then she read about the real-life story of brothers Adolf and Rudolf Dassler. For years the two lived and worked together, making shoes in a small German town. A jet suit that could allow paramedics to fly quickly to the scene of accidents has been tested by the local ambulance service in the Lake District. The suit would help health professionals zoom to the top of local hills and mountains (known as fells) within 90 seconds, avoiding lengthy hikes and allowing them to reach a patient much sooner. The idea for using a jet suit to speed across the tough terrain came from Andy Mawson, director of operations at the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS). At the moment, GNAAS uses helicopters to reach injured hikers and climbers in areas of northern England that include Cumbria, the north-east, and North Yorkshire. For 33 years, people around the world have been scanning the pages of picture books, looking for a man in a red and white striped jumper called Wally. The search began in 1987 with the publication of the first Where’s Wally? book by the English artist Martin Handford. Handford was known for his drawings of large crowds and had been asked by the publisher, Walker Books, to create a picture book filled with crowd scenes. Someone at Walker Books then suggested to him that he include a character on each page for the readers to spot. In response, Handford created Wally and the book went on to be a huge hit. Walking down a country lane in Cumbria recently, I saw a red squirrel. It wriggled through bright rosehips and hopped up onto a dry stone wall. It sat and seemed to ponder life in the late afternoon light. It was autumnal-leaf red, with a clean white front. Its fur was sleek and shiny. Red squirrels were once common all over the UK but since the 1870s they have been pushed out by the much larger grey squirrel. There are now thought to be just 120,000 red squirrels left in the UK, mostly in Scotland and the north of England, where conservation groups have worked hard to protect them. Carbon dioxide (CO2) released into the atmosphere causes temperatures on Earth to rise. Carbon dioxide comes from burning fossil fuels such as oil and gas to power cars, generate electricity and heat houses. There are a few ways that every family can reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. If a journey is less than a mile, why not suggest walking instead of driving to cut your fuel use? Eating fruit and vegetables that are in season in the UK, such as apples, blackberries and leeks in autumn, means less fuel is used transporting out-of-season crops from overseas. Gravity Industries was founded in March 2017 by Richard Browning, an English inventor nicknamed “the real-life Iron Man”. Browning holds the world record for the fastest speed in a body-controlled jet-powered suit after achieving a speed of 85.06 miles per hour at Brighton in 2019. Gravity Industries made huge advances in the world of jet suits and the company hopes that jet suits will become far more commonly used in the future. Scientists at Purdue University in Indiana, US, have invented a waterproof keyboard made from paper. They coated the paper in a special chemical solution that repels dust and liquids. Then they printed circuits on one side of the sheet, using layers of material that conducts electricity, and keyboard letters on the other. When the letters are pushed, the pressure generates a tiny electric current and sends a Bluetooth signal to a nearby computer. This means that the keyboard doesn’t need a power source to work. Among Us has become one of the biggest gaming hits of 2020, even though it came out in 2018. The multiplayer mystery game is set on a spaceship, with between four and 10 players trying to carry out their jobs preparing for lift-off. However, one player is an “impostor” whose job is to frustrate those tasks, and even kill the other players without being found out. The game was developed by a small, three-person company called InnerSloth. It originally came out for smartphones in June 2018, then PC computers in November that year. Based in the north-east of England, the Children’s Heart Unit Fund (CHUF) raises money for the children’s heart unit at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne, which is one of only two centres in the country that carries out heart transplants for children. The Irish Supreme Court has ruled that the bread used for Subway sandwiches is not really bread because it contains too much sugar. The US company has shops in 110 countries, including the UK and Ireland. Its 15-centimetre bread rolls, called subs, each contain five grams of sugar – that’s more sugar than two digestive biscuits, which contain 2.4 grams each. This ruling means that Subway will have to pay more tax in Ireland because its sugary rolls will be classed as confectionery rather than bread.…

Doreen Lawrence is an anti-racism campaigner. Racism is when people are treated badly or unfairly because of their skin colour, culture or nationality. In 1993, her 18-year-old son, Stephen, was killed in a racist attack. No one was found responsible for his death until 2012. In 1999 an inquiry found that racism in the police force was one of the main reasons the case had not been solved. This led to changes in the police and other public bodies, such as the NHS. Walter Tull was one of the UK’s first black professional footballers. He played more than 100 matches for clubs including Tottenham Hotspur and Northampton Town, earning a lot of praise from newspapers. Despite his talents, Tull faced racist abuse from rival supporters. Racism is treating people badly or unfairly because of their skin colour, culture or nationality. Tull’s successful football career was interrupted by the outbreak off the First World War (1914–1918). He signed up to join the army’s Football Battalion and is remembered as one of Britain’s first black officers. Tull had agreed to play for Rangers in Glasgow, Scotland, after the war. Scientists have discovered a deadly event in the history of life, called a mass extinction, that wiped out many ancient species and probably paved the way for the rise of the dinosaurs. The extinction happened between 232 and 234 million years ago, after huge volcanic eruptions in what is now western Canada. Doctor Jacopo Dal Corso, from the University of Leeds, in England, was one of 17 international researchers involved in the study. He explains that the eruptions released large quantities of gases such as carbon dioxide. The gases trapped heat in the atmosphere (the layer of gases that surround Earth), causing global temperatures to rise. Lella Lombardi was the last female driver to appear in a Formula One (F1) race, in 1976. The Italian started 12 F1 races, more than any other female, between 1974 and 1976 and is the only woman to score points in F1. Another Italian, Maria Teresa de Filippis, became the first woman to start an F1 race in 1958 with the Maserati racing team. Two brides have got their wedding dresses back after a mix-up at a dry cleaners more than 30 years ago. After her wedding in 1989, Cathy Prior took her dress to be cleaned. Three years ago she opened the dress’s box for the first time since 1989 – and realised she had the wrong one. Eventually, on 19 September this year, she posted about it on social media. Kayla Hotson saw the post and realised the same thing had happened to her mum Janet’s wedding dress – which had been taken to the same dry cleaners.
