On 12 September, a British woman set a new record for the quickest time rowing from the US mainland to Hawaii, a US state in the Pacific Ocean. Lia Ditton, from London, completed the astonishing journey of around 2,800 miles alone and without any help. It took 86 days, 10 hours, five minutes and 56 seconds, making her the fastest woman to complete the crossing. The previous record was 100 days, set by Roz Savage in 2008.
Ditton, who is 40 years old, set off from San Francisco, US, on 17 June 2020, in a boat that was around 6.5 metres long. During the epic voyage, she faced many dangerous challenges, including a shortage of food, capsizing twice, and encountering waves the size of buildings.
