SPOONBILLS IN SUFFOLK Spoonbill chicks have hatched on Havergate Island in Suffolk, England for the first time since 1668. Conservationists have been encouraging spoonbills to breed in the county for more than a decade by restoring the birds’ natural habitats and building nests there. As a child, Carrie Hope Fletcher starred in stage shows such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Les Misérables and Mary Poppins. “I sort of grew up backstage,” she told The Week Junior, and these experiences inspired her first book for young readers, Into the Spotlight. The book is a reimagining of the classic novel Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfeild, which tells the story of three sisters who train for a career on stage. Not many schoolchildren can boast that their teacher is also a world-class athlete. Year 4 pupils at Danetree Primary School in Surrey, England, can. On 5 September their teacher, Jessie Knight, won the 400 metres hurdles race at the British Athletics Championships in Manchester, England. “I love my job and I love athletics. The whole school is with me along the way and all the parents and children watch,” said Knight after her win. In the 400 metres hurdles, athletes run and jump over 10 hurdles that are evenly spaced around the track. It is Knight’s favourite event. Kimono, which in Japanese means “thing to wear”, is one of the most traditional items of clothing worn by Japanese people. It is made from long pieces of cloth woven together, draped loosely over the body and tied up with a sash called an obi. Until the late 19th century, the kimono was an everyday item of clothing in Japan but now it is mostly worn for special events such as weddings. Surfing is a fun activity – around the world people of all ages get on a board and take to the waves. It takes lots of practice and understanding of the way a wave will move you. After a while, though, you’ll learn what to do and have fun riding along in the water. There are different types of surfing. Longboard surfing is more traditional and it’s done on a surfboard that’s around 2.7 to three metres long. Disney lists Mulan as one of its 12 official princesses, but her parents aren’t a king and queen, and she doesn’t marry a prince. Instead, she goes to war to protect her family. Scientists have worked out the size of a giant shark called an Otodus megalodon, which lived from around 23 million to three million years ago. Researchers from the University of Bristol, England, and Swansea University, Wales, used comparisons with modern sharks to calculate how big the megalodon was. They worked out that if the huge shark was 16 metres long, it would have had a head about 4.65 metres long and a dorsal fin 1.62 metres tall.…

From 18 to 25 September, the Marine Conservation Society, a charity that helps protect the UK’s seas, shores and wildlife, is holding the Great British Beach Clean. The event happens every year and is a chance for people to head to the beach to pick up litter. Usually, there are big events that people can join but because of the coronavirus outbreak, this year the charity is encouraging people to run small beach cleans with friends and families, following the social-distancing guidelines for their area. For more than 30 years, when scientists have wanted to see if something will work on people, they have often tested it on pigs to see how it affects them first. This is because pigs have several important similarities to humans. For example, a 60 kilogram pig shares the same fat distribution and hair cover as an adult human. The world of heart studies, in particular, uses pigs because their hearts are very similar in structure to ours. It is thought that within a few years, it will be possible to take a pig’s heart and transplant it into a human patient.…

A robot has been invented that keeps pets company when their owners are out. The robot, called Pumpkii, links to the home’s Wi-Fi system, and can be controlled remotely by the pet’s owner through an app on their phone. Owners can talk to their pets via the robot, or instruct it to give them treats. Once its battery gets down to 20%, the robot takes itself back to its station to recharge. 14 September 1959 Luna 2 makes first ever Moon landing On 14 September 1959, the Luna 2 spacecraft landed on the Moon. This was the first time a man-made object had landed on the Moon. Scientists at Texas A&M University in the US are working on a method to 3D print buildings that are less damaging to the environment than those built with usual building methods and materials. 3D-printing is when a computer controls the layering of materials into a specific 3D shape, such as a house. The university’s Professor Sarbajit Banerjee says that 3D printing can allow them to create an entire building using local materials, such as the soil beneath the building site, instead of concrete. Concrete is the most widely used building material on Earth. It is used twice as much as all other materials combined. Today’s robots can do all kinds of things, including vacuuming your carpet or exploring the surface of Mars. However, the bots in the new mobile game Robotics are not interested in either of these tasks. They have some rather more exciting things to do. These are fighting robots, designed to battle one another. The only problem? They need to be taught to walk first – and that’s where you come in. In the game you start out with a basic robot that has legs and a lightsaber-style weapon. You must first teach it to walk and fight by swiping your finger on the screen to show it how to move its limbs. Young people are feeling under pressure from the “perfect” photos they see on social media apps, according to a new study by Girlguiding. The British charity, which runs the Brownies, Guides and Rangers organisations, asked its panel of people aged between 11 and 21 for their views, as part of its annual Girls’ Attitudes survey. It found that 48% of them regularly use apps or filters to make photos of themselves look better online, and 39% feel upset that they can’t look that way in real life. The study also found that 54% of girls have seen online adverts that made them feel under pressure to look different.
