Rare black rhinos return to Rwanda
On 24 June, five critically endangered eastern black rhinoceroses, born in zoos in Europe, were flown to Rwanda, in Africa, in an attempt to revive numbers in the country. The three female and two male rhinos made the 3,700-mile journey from the Czech Republic, where the animals had been gathered, to Akagera National Park, in Rwanda. The journey took around 30 hours and was the largest ever transport of rhinos from Europe to Africa.
The rhinos were kept in bomas (enclosures made with wooden poles) for several months, until vets and wildlife experts were happy that they were ready for life in the wild. In June, the animals were finally released to roam free in the park.
