Protests over new president’s election
Thousands of people have marched in Algeria’s capital city to protest against a recent election. Activists in Algiers say the new president, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, is a close ally of the former leader, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who left his job after protests earlier this year. Bouteflika, who had been in power since 1999, was criticised for not doing enough to stop unemployment and corruption (dishonest behaviour of those in power). Only 40% of the population voted in the election.
