Chris Froome, the British cyclist who has won the Tour de France four times, has thanked people for their support after he suffered a serious crash on 12 June. The cyclist was practising one of the stages of a race called the Critérium du Dauphiné in France, when he took his hand off his handlebars to blow his nose. Froome was riding at around 37mph when it is thought a gust of wind knocked him off balance and he slammed into a wall. Froome broke several bones and damaged his neck. 22 June 1948 The Empire Windrush arrives in the UK On 22 June 1948, the Empire Windrush ship arrived in Essex carrying about 500 people from Jamaica and other Caribbean islands. They had been invited by the UK Government to live and work in the UK because there was a shortage of people to fill jobs. They were the first of thousands of people who arrived between 1948 and 1971, and became known as the Windrush generation. On 13 June, a documentary about 13-year-old Jonathan Bryan, called My Life: Locked In Boy, won the Sandford St Martin’s Award for Children’s Broadcasting. Accepting the award, Jonathan said, “What you see on the outside is not a measure of what goes on inside.” Jonathan was born with cerebral palsy, a condition that affects coordination and movement. This has left him unable to speak. With the help of his mother, he learnt to communicate by looking at letters on a spelling board, which a helper then reads out as words. In an interview with The Week Junior, Jonathan said it was amazing to receive this award. One of the highlights of the documentary is his meeting with author Michael Morpurgo. If everybody walking next to a canal or river picked up one piece of litter each, England’s waterways would be free from rubbish within a year. This is according to The Canal & River Trust, the charity that looks after waterways in England and Wales. It has launched a campaign to get people to join in and make cleaner waterways a reality. There are about 2,200 miles of canals in the UK that are navigable (can be used by boats), and several million pieces of plastic litter end up in or around them each year. As well as not looking very nice, this plastic litter can have a really damaging effect on the environment and the creatures that live around the canals. The pollution causes other problems, too. Reducing plastic pollution Single-use plastics will be banned in Canada from 2021. The country’s prime minister, Justin Trudeau, said harmful plastics would be reduced by the ban. A truckload of plastic enters the world’s oceans every minute, and plastic kills about a million birds and 100,000 mammals every year. Plants A global study has found that at least 571 plant species have died out since 1750, although the real number of extinctions is probably higher. Scientists said that the number, which is double that of all extinct birds, mammals and amphibians combined, was a serious concern.…

Anew study of pterosaur eggs has found that the ancient reptiles might have hatched with their wings already fully grown. Pterosaurs lived alongside the dinosaurs, and were the first flying reptiles. This finding shows that they could fly very soon after birth, unlike modern birds, whose wings must grow after hatching before they can fly. The discovery was made by Dr David Unwin, a palaeontologist (a scientist who studies fossils) and Denis Charles Deeming, a zoologist (an expert in animals) in the UK. They looked at 37 pterosaur eggs from a collection of 300 found in Jinzhou, China, in 2017. During the BBC debate, Erin, a 15-year-old climate campaigner from Glasgow, asked the candidates if they would reduce carbon emissions to zero by 2025. Carbon emissions are partly responsible for climate change. They are produced when fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas are burnt. A 50-YEAR-OLD ORANGUTAN France’s most famous orangutan, Nénette, celebrated her 50th birthday at Jardin des Plantes zoo in Paris on 16 June. Nénette, who’s known for her love of painting, is one of the world’s oldest Borneo orangutans in captivity. For her birthday she was given an art workshop, cake, fruit and wrapped boxes. Scientists have discovered a crater under the sea in Scotland, that they think was created by an ancient space rock that crash-landed on Earth. If confirmed, it would be the largest impact crater – the dent made when a falling rock smashes into the ground – in the UK. Scientists believe the crater was formed around 1.2 billion years ago. To make such a giant hole the space rock – called a meteorite – must have been about a kilometre wide, weighed three billion tonnes and slammed into Earth at 38,000mph. The meteorite is thought to have hit between nine and 12 miles off the coast of the north-west Highlands, underneath a stretch of water known as The Minch. What’s the scariest thing you’ve done recently? I scare so easily! I was proud of myself for picking up a spider recently and putting it in the garden. ● The US space agency NASA has said it is opening the International Space Station (ISS) to tourists from 2020. Visitors will be able to spend up to 30 days there, but only two people can go each year. ● It will cost £27,500 per night to stay at the ISS. In addition, each visitor will have to spend about £40 million to fly there and back. Vredefort crater The world’s largest impact site is the Vredefort crater, near Johannesburg in South Africa. It was 190 miles wide when it formed, about two billion years ago. Sudbury Basin Located in Ontario, in Canada, the Sudbury impact site was made by a massive space rock that hit about 1.8 billion years ago. A flight leaving Manchester was delayed after a passenger accidentally opened the emergency exit while trying to get to the loo before take-off. The unnamed woman thought she was opening the door to the plane’s toilet, but instead launched an evacuation slide that grounded the flight for hours. Officials said there weren’t enough air crew on board to stop the woman before she made the mistake. Most passengers arrived in Pakistan seven hours later than expected.…
