The Conservative Party, led by UK Prime Minister Theresa May, has suffered major losses at local elections across England. The party lost control of 49 councils, while their main opposition, the Labour Party, lost six. The Liberal Democrats, Independents and Greens all gained seats.
What are local elections?
Local elections are when people elect councillors, who are responsible for making decisions on local issues such as transport and rubbish collections. They represent people at a local level, unlike Members of Parliament, who represent people at a national level. Local elections take place at least every four years, but they don’t all happen at the same time.
