On 1 May, a new emperor ascended to the Japanese throne. Naruhito became the 126th Japanese monarch, replacing his father, Emperor , who has stepped down because of old age. Like the Queen in the UK, Japan’s emperors don’t make laws or rule the country, but a change of emperor is still a big occasion. Naruhito’s reign has been named Reiwa, which refers to order and harmony. Each year from 29 April, Japan celebrates Golden Week, when businesses and schools close. This year the holiday lasts 10 days because of the change of emperor.
