Events have been held to mark 25 years since the beginning of a genocide in Rwanda, a country in east Africa. A genocide is the deliberate killing of a large group of people of a particular nation, religion or race. EGYPT’S OLDEST PYRAMID A team of engineers from Newport, in Wales, has repaired the 4,700-year-old Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara in Egypt. It had been at risk of collapsing since an earthquake in 1992. They said the repair was like a “massive game of Kerplunk” (a children’s game). RESCUING A TORTOISE An escaped tortoise has been rescued after wandering for four days around Wrexham wood, in Wales. The RSPCA, an animal charity, found the female Horsefield tortoise after people reported seeing it there. The RSPCA is now trying to find her owner and work out how she ended up in the woodlands. Astronomers (scientists who study everything beyond the Earth and its atmosphere, such as the stars and planets) from Liverpool John Moores University are helping animal scientists from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Hutan, a French charity, to help save orangutans on the island of Borneo in Asia. One of the hardest things about protecting orangutans is that they sleep and live in trees, but scientists can only search for them from the ground. This is difficult because orangutans are hard to track in the trees over large areas. Instead, conservationists are using drones fitted with thermal-imaging cameras, which can fly above the trees and detect through the leaves the heat given off by the orangutans’ bodies. In 1986, Bill Heine asked his friend to help “liven up” his home in Oxford. His friend, sculptor John Buckley, did just that – creating a massive shark crashing through the roof of Heine’s house. The local council tried to get Heine to take it down, but this prompted an outpouring of support from the public – and the government. In the end, Heine lived with the shark until his death on 2 April. Tributes have poured in ever since; he has been described as a “colourful character” who inspired people. 11 April 1912 The Titanic sets sail on doomed voyage On 11 April 1912, the Royal Mail Ship (RMS) Titanic set sail from Queenstown, (now called Cobh) in Ireland and headed for New York, in the US. The Titanic was one of the largest ships ever built at the time. On 14 April, the Titanic was sailing through an area known to have icebergs. When two lookouts spotted an iceberg, they alerted the captain, who turned the ship. It was too late – the Titanic hit the iceberg and began to sink. Lisa Faulkner is an actor who, in 2010, won Celebrity Masterchef, the TV cooking programme. The show had a big effect on Faulkner’s life, and since 2010, the foodie fan has released a series of cookbooks. Australia has launched an ambitious project to save some of its most threatened species. The Great Southern Ark project will involve creating a protected area of 1,200 square kilometres for vulnerable plants and animals in an old mining area in a region called the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia. A peninsula is a thin piece of land mostly surrounded by sea, but still connected to the mainland. The project has taken more than 10 years of planning and is a joint effort between several wildlife charities and the Australian government. The first stage will be to build a fence at the narrowest point of the peninsula to keep out predators such as cats and foxes. Saving water A famous statue of a peeing boy in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, has been upgraded to reduce its water use. The Manneken Pis had been wasting 1,000 to 2,500 litres of fresh drinking water every day, so a new channel was installed to collect the water and put it back into the statue. Amphibians A new global study has found that a type of fungus, spread around the world, has been responsible for the extinction of at least 90 species of frogs, salamanders and toads in the last 50 years. The Mars Express is a spacecraft on a mission to collect as much data as possible about the Red Planet. It arrived at Mars in 2003, and has been circling the planet ever since. During its mission, the spacecraft has found methane in Mars’s atmosphere; mapped out areas of ice; possibly found a source of underground water on the planet; and flown close to Phobos, one of Mars’s two moons. Imagine walking down the street and seeing an eight-metre shark stuck in the roof of one of the houses. You’d probably think you were dreaming. Well, in 1986, that’s exactly what a man named Bill Heine decided he wanted for his new house in  Oxford. The Headington Shark, as it was called, quickly became a local landmark, despite the local council trying for six years to get him to remove it. Although Heine died on 2 April, the shark is still stuck in his house, looking as though it has just crashed out of the sky.
