Some politicians say young people should stay at school. Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old pupil from Sweden, sparked an international campaign last summer when she began skipping school on Fridays to protest against climate change outside the Swedish parliament. Since then, thousands of students around the world have joined her. They believe that making their voices heard is more important than going to school. Their actions have been welcomed by some, including politicians and scientists, who say they are raising awareness of the issue in a positive way. A frog found in the mountains of south-west India has been revealed to be the only one of its type ever found. Known as the starry dwarf frog, the frog has an orange belly and tiny white spots on its body that look like stars. It is two to three centimetres long and was found in the Western Ghats mountains in 2010 by researchers from India and the US. After analysing the frog’s DNA, the scientists have now been able to show that the frog is one of a kind. The researchers believe its nearest relative probably died out about 57–76 million years ago.…

Picking up litter People around the world are taking part in an online challenge to pick up litter from beaches, parks and roads. The #Trashtag challenge – where people take photos before and after clearing up a specific location – has attracted more than 30,000 posts on Instagram alone. British ash trees A tree fungus called ash dieback is spreading faster than previously thought in the UK, according to the BBC, and has affected about 70% of ash trees in European woodland. On 14 March, the 10-year-old was selected for the Great Britain skateboarding team that will try to reach the tournament. If she qualifies for the Olympics in Japan next year, Brown will become Britain’s youngest summer Olympian. She will be 12 when the event begins on 24 July 2020. The Six Nations tournament came to a dramatic end on 16 March as Wales’s men’s rugby team and England’s women’s team both won Grand Slams. A Grand Slam is when a team wins all the games they play in the tournament. Wales’s men beat Ireland 25-7 to secure a third Grand Slam in 11 years. Charlie Condell has become the youngest Briton to cycle around the world. The 18-year-old set off from his home city of Bristol in July 2018 and arrived back there eight months later. He cycled by himself, with no support team, through 20 countries and faced potholes, snakes and strong winds. 23 March 1888 Clubs meet to form Football League On 23 March 1888, a group of leading English football clubs joined together to discuss forming the Football League. Representatives from the teams met near Fleet Street in London for what was described as a friendly conference. They met again on 17 April in Manchester before officially setting up the league of 12 teams, which was the first competitive league in the world. Scientists have discovered more than 100 new species of beetles known as weevils on the island of Sulawesi, in Indonesia. Weevils are beetles with snouts. There are already 40,000 known weevil species across the world, but until now there was only thought to be one weevil species on Sulawesi. Now, the island has 103 more species than it did before. Dr Alexander Riedel, from the Natural History Museum Karlsruhe, in Germany, and Raden Pramesa Narakusumo, from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences’ Research Center for Biology, discovered the new beetles in remote areas of rainforest on the island. Two 17-year-old Kenyan campaigners have addressed global leaders at one of the world’s biggest environmental conferences. Charlotte Wanja and Shlok Sachdev spoke on the theme “Our Earth in 2050” at the United Nations (UN) Environment Assembly. They talked about the issue of pollution and its impact on future generations. The UN is an organisation of 193 countries that work together on issues including peace and equality. When a leech bites, it releases a chemical called hirudin, which causes blood to flow more freely. During an earthquake, the most dangerous things are collapsing buildings, not the actual tremors. Brick buildings, in particular, often crumble when an earthquake hits. To help strengthen brick buildings in the event of a natural disaster, Kenjiro Yamamoto and his colleagues at the University of Tokyo, in Japan, have created an earthquake-resistant paint. Their paint is made from stretchy, plastic-based liquid mixed with reinforcing glass fibres. As well as strengthening a building, the paint can lessen the impact of an earthquake byy allowing the building to flex and sway with the tremors without falling to pieces.
