Venezuela’s president, Nicolás Maduro, is under pressure to hold a new election, and there is uncertainty about the South American country’s future. Protesters have taken to the streets, and the opposition leader, Juan Guaidó, has declared himself leader of the country. The crisis has drawn international attention; countries including Brazil, Canada and the US are supporting Guaidó, whereas China, Russia and others back Maduro.
What happened?
