Around 70,000 people have lost their homes following a deadly earthquake on an Indonesian island. 11 August 1968 The last steam-train passenger service On 11 August 1968, the last regular steam-train passenger service ran on British railways. The train, known as the 15 Guinea Special, ran from Liverpool to Carlisle, via Manchester, and returned back to Liverpool. Some 450 rail enthusiasts made the last journey before British Rail announced a ban on steam engines on 12 August. This year’s combination of unusually high temperatures and lack of rain means that conditions are, so far, too dry for a traditional colourful autumn. Instead of seeing the leaves turn from green to red, orange and yellow, experts have warned that if the UK doesn’t receive more rain – and soon – the country will experience a very brown and boring-looking autumn. The Forestry Commission England, a government department responsible for England’s woodlands, says that trees need a warm yet slightly moist summer in order to build up the sugars in their leaves. They move slowly, crawling with their tube feet, and sometimes pushing themselves with their spines. Anna Du is a 12-year-old from the US who wants to protect marine animals against plastic pollution. She has created an underwater, remotely operated vehicle that can track down microplastics using infrared light. Du chose infrared light because it can help scientists tell the difference between microplastics and other, non-harmful materials underwater. The device takes photos of the plastics to help scientists find and remove them. “Plastics are already a huge problem, and then there are microplastics,” said Du. “When fish eat it, they get a toxin called bisphenol A in their bodies, and even if they poop the plastics out, they keep the toxin inside them.” Du is a finalist in the 2018 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge.…

The European Championships is a new sports competition, held this year in Glasgow and Berlin from 2–12 August. Cycling, gymnastics, rowing, swimming, team golf and triathlon have been taking place around Glasgow. Athletics events like the 100-metre and 200-metre sprints, hurdles, 10,000-metres, shot put and heptathlon were hosted in Berlin, Germany. Countries competing in the championships include Croatia, France, Italy, The Netherlands and Poland. The UN International Youth Day 2018 is on 12 August. This year’s theme is “Safe Spaces”. A safe space is somewhere where young people can meet, pursue their interests and share ideas and opinions. It can be a physical place – such as a community centre or a sports club – or a safe online space or child-friendly social media platform, like Popjam. Lombok sits within what’s called the Ring of Fire – an imagined horseshoe-shaped belt that outlines the Pacific Ocean. It is where 75% of the Earth’s volcanoes are and where 90% of the world’s earthquakes occur. That’s because the Ring of Fire traces the path of faultlines – where huge slabs of the Earth’s crust, called tectonic plates, meet each other. The surface layer of the Earth (the crust) is made of tectonic plates, which slide past each other and collide with one another on a layer of solid and liquid rock called the mantle. From now until 27 August, the Scottish city of Edinburgh will be buzzing with creative artists from all over the world, who have turned up to take part in this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Last month, a mansion that was home to Chester Zoo founder George Mottershead, his family and lots of wild animals reopened following a £3 million restoration project. The kitchen chairs that had been pecked by pelicans have been removed and a stained-glass window destroyed by a bear has been replaced, but visitors can still see claw marks in the former library where lion cubs were once bottle-fed and left to roam. Anglesey Abbey was founded in 1135 by King Henry I as a hospital and converted into a priory in the 13th century. A priory is a building where nuns or monks live, work and pray. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker Nintendo Switch (£34.99) Mario’s mushroom-headed Toad has played a role in lots of Nintendo games, but he’s the star of this one, which originally came out on the Wii U console in 2015, but has now been re-released for the Switch. Huge sinkhole appears overnight An enormous sinkhole, large enough to swallow a 15-floor building, appeared overnight in a field near the Russian town of Neledino. A sinkhole can be caused when underground soluble rock dissolves, causing the land on top to cave in; this is what is thought to have happened here. The 32-metre-wide sinkhole was first discovered by mushroom pickers and has since been cordoned off to stop people from getting too close.
