29 June 1613 London’s Globe theatre burns down On 29 June 1613, the Globe theatre in Southwark, London, where many of Shakespeare’s plays were performed, burned down. During a performance of Henry VIII, a prop cannon misfired and set the thatched roof alight. No one was injured and the theatre was rebuilt, but it was demolished in 1644. Hadrian’s Wall in the north of England is considered to be the most important relic of Roman Britain, and much of it can still be seen today. Building is thought to have begun in AD122 and it stretches for 73 miles from Wallsend in the east to Solway Firth in the west. It is illegal to dig around Hadrian’s Wall and anyone who uses a metal detector in the area without permission is committing a criminal offence. However this hasn’t stopped looters, who have been nicknamed nighthawks, from illegally hunting for Roman treasure. Karl Nova is the first hip-hop artist to win the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education’s CLiPPA (Centre for Literacy in Primary Poetry Award) prize. He won the accolade for his debut book of poems called Rhythm and Poetry. One judge said Nova’s poems have a “sincere charm that children and young people can relate to and that may inspire their own writing”. The inspiration for Nova’s book came from workshops that he holds in schools, and from his performances. The Government has announced a new strategy to help fight childhood obesity (when a child is very overweight). Amazing fossils of frogs encased in amber (hardened tree resin) have been found in Myanmar, giving scientists a glimpse into a lost world. The four tiny amphibians were so well preserved that scientists could see their skulls, forelimbs and parts of their backbone and hind legs. The frogs lived at the same time as dinosaurs nearly 100 million years ago. Other lumps of amber found in the same place contained an aquatic spider and plants such as moss and bamboo.
