Thunderstorms come from cumulonimbus – large, tall clouds made up of little particles of water in the air. Warm air makes the clouds grow and move upwards to where the air is colder. On 21 May, the UK Prime Minister Theresa May announced that the Government would give millions of pounds to fund artificial intelligence and revolutionise healthcare. Artificial intelligence (AI) makes it possible for machines to learn from experience and perform tasks that usually require human intelligence. In healthcare, AI could be used to study vast amounts of data. For example, AI could scan all past medical records held by the National Health Service (NHS) to learn how to diagnose conditions. Message in a bottle finds its way home Angi Webb was kayaking down the Pearl River in Mississippi, US, when she spotted a floating bottle. In it she found a nearly 30-year-old message dated 10 February 1989, from two children called Tony and Chris Taylor. Webb decided to post an image of the bottle on her Facebook page and track down the authors. Luckily, the Taylor family got in touch. A coin made to celebrate the peace talks was selling for a reduced price after Trump said that the meeting wouldn’t go ahead. The US government produced the coin shortly after the meeting was announced. The coin had been criticised, because the meeting had not yet happened. When Trump officially called off the talks, the price was cut and the website crashed as people rushed to buy them. 2 June 1910 First non-stop return flight across the English Channel On 2 June 1910, Charles Rolls became the first person to fly across the English Channel and come back without stopping. More than 3,000 people gathered to watch his plane take off from Swingate, near Dover. Rolls left at around 6.30pm, flew to France and returned to Dover in 95 minutes. A garden that celebrates the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the Windrush generation has won a gold medal at the Chelsea Flower Show. The Windrush generation were a group of people who were invited to live and work in the UK after the Second World War, because there was a shortage of people to fill all the jobs. In return, they were granted British citizenship and played an important part in post-war Britain. The tribute shows the ship the people came on, the HMT Empire Windrush, surrounded by flowers from the Caribbean and the UK. The garden was designed by the former television presenter, Baroness Floella Benjamin, who arrived in the UK from Trinidad and Tobago in 1960 aged 11. Artificial intelligence developed by a Kenya-based company called Kimetrica can detect from a single photo whether a child is malnourished. Malnutrition happens when someone has had too little food, or too little of the right food to keep them healthy. About five children around the world die every minute because they are malnourished. Kimetrica showed its AI system called Meron (Method for Extremely Rapid Observation of Nutritional status) 4,000 images of children to train it to spot signs of malnutrition. This could help assess children’s health in places where fighting makes it unsafe for doctors to work. Using AI software could also cut the cost of diagnosing children, which can be very expensive. Wherever malnutrition is found, medical teams from organisations such as the United Nations can target it.…

Gamers with disabilities that make it difficult to use regular controllers usually have to spend lots of money adapting the controllers to suit them. Now, Microsoft is releasing the Xbox Adaptive Controller, designed specifically for people with disabilities. The Adaptive Controller acts as a central hub, which allows people to plug in different switches, touchpads or joysticks to replace the traditional buttons. Solomon Romney, a Microsoft Store learning specialist who was born with no fingers on his left hand, loves the idea of the new controller. “If I want to play a game entirely with my feet, I can. Spanish team Real Madrid were crowned men’s champions on 26 May after beating Liverpool 3-1 in Kiev, Ukraine. Two days earlier in the same city, Lyon, from France, took the women’s prize by defeating Germany’s Wolfsburg 4-1. The Champions League is the biggest competition in European club football. Made popular in New York, in the US, in the 1970s, this dance form involves fast footwork, athletic ability and lots of acrobatic movements. If you think horizontal banknotes are boring – and you live in Northern Ireland – then you’re in luck. Ulster Bank will be releasing the UK’s first vertical banknotes next year. The designs on the £5 and £10 notes are based on the theme “Living in nature” and feature Brent Geese, Irish hares and scenes from Strangford Lough (a lake in County Down), among other things. Burping is a release of gas from the stomach or windpipe. When we eat we swallow air, and this air makes its way down into the digestive system. When it’s ready to escape it comes back up as a bubble of gas, released with a classic belch. Because they contain a gas called carbon dioxide, fizzy drinks can make us burp more than usual. This gas is trapped in the guts and released, just like the swallowed air. In the UK we consider burping to be rude, but other cultures see it differently.
