The Amazon is a vast region that spans eight countries in South America: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Venezuela and Suriname, and French Guiana (which is technically part of France). The area is known for the Amazon rainforest – the world’s largest tropical rainforest.
It was once thought that the Amazon was largely uninhabited until Europeans turned up in the 16th century, however, new research suggests that it was actually home to millions of people.
A new study, published on 27 March, reveals 81 sites that were previously unknown to scientists, where humans lived thousands of years ago.
