Buried deep inside a mountain in the Arctic Circle is the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, a secure building that stores some of the world’s most precious seeds. At the end of February, it passed the million-seed mark.
Opened in 2008, the vault is capable of holding 2.25 billion seeds at any time. On 26 February, around 70,000 seeds were deposited, bringing the total up to 1,059,646. The contents of the vault include the most common and important foods on Earth, such as barley, cowpea, lettuce, maize, potato, rice and wheat.
