A second major hurricane has hit the US, after Hurricane Harvey destroyed parts of Texas last month. Hurricane Irma began in the Caribbean and arrived in Florida, in the US, last weekend. At least 47 people died. Here’s how the disaster unfolded. 30 August – 5 September Irma began as a tropical storm in with winds of up to 50mph. Over the next few days, it became a hurricane, and wind speeds reached 151mph, making it the most powerful storm in the Atlantic Ocean since records began. 6 September Irma reached the island of Barbuda, destroying lots of properties. Cycling UK has said that action must be taken to prevent the injuries and deaths of cyclists caused by people “car-dooring” – opening car doors before checking that the coast is clear. As well as higher fines for opening car doors carelessly, the campaign group is calling for a Dutch door-opening method to be taught. The “Dutch reach” as it is known, involves opening the car door with the hand that is furthest away from it. This forces people to turn their body and look over their shoulder to check for approaching cyclists.…

For centuries, tales of mythical creatures have been told. Some of these creatures, such as the komodo dragon, the manatee and the platypus, were at one time thought to be just legends but turned out to be real animals. Others, such as the griffin – a winged creature with the body of a lion, a snake’s tail and a beak – are only seen in storybooks. A recent survey from the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), however, revealed that British people are more aware of mythical creatures than they are of some endangered living animals. To test people’s awareness of real and fake creatures, ZSL presented a list of names to 1,000 people and asked them to identify the ones they recognised. After nearly two decades, Nasa’s Cassini mission was on course for an explosive end on 15 September, as the spacecraft was expected to burn up in Saturn’s atmosphere (an envelope of gases that protects a planet). On 15 October 1997 the Cassini spacecraft blasted off from Cape Canaveral in Florida, US, to embark on a seven-year journey to the second-largest planet in our solar system, Saturn. During this journey, Cassini passed Venus twice, gathering important data, and flew by Earth, the Moon and even Jupiter, before arriving at Saturn in 2004. Tinycards by Duolingo Android / iOS (Free) You might already know about Duolingo: it‘s a language-learning platform. It has an app for learning languages that is popular with young people and adults. Tinycards is Duolingo’s new app, which can be used for all kinds of learning. It’s an app equivalent of the paper flash cards that are sometimes used to learn vocabulary. These digital flash cards are sorted into decks – more than 10,000 of them – for topics including geography, history, languages and science. The decks include the countries and capitals of Europe, important women in history, the periodic table and muscles of the body. While the big news this week is about the impact of a powerful storm elsewhere in the world, in the UK we have just experienced the first major storm of the season. Storm Aileen, as it is named, battered parts of the country with high winds and heavy downpours. Thousands of homes were left without power, trees fell and roads were blocked. Sealand celebrates 50th birthday On 2 September, one of the world’s tiniest nations celebrated its 50th birthday. During the Second World War (1939–1945) a twin-towered fortress, called Fort Roughs Tower, was built about eight miles off the Suffolk coast in the North Sea, to protect British waters from enemy invaders. In 1967, the structure was bought by ex-army major Roy Bates who declared it a sovereign state – a territory that has its own government. Bates named the micro-nation Sealand, calling himself Prince, and his wife Princess Joan. The state has its own flag, passport, currency and national anthem. DIDYOU KNOW? The Woodland Trust has revealed the trees that are on the shortlist to win Tree of the Year 2017. The public can vote for their favourite tree in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Saturn’s rings In January this year, Cassini sent back the most detailed ever images of Saturn’s rings. The images suggested that the rings could be home to millions of miniature moons, as well as dust, ice and rock. The Northern Storm Late in 2010, the Cassini spacecraft witnessed a violent storm on Saturn. Nicknamed the Northern Storm, it produced a 3,000-mile-wide dark vortex (a whirling mass of air). Bottles and cans The Scottish government has announced a new recycling scheme that will see customers paying a little extra for their bottles and cans – an amount that would be refunded when they are returned empty to a shop. It could save local authorities up to £6 million on litter clean-ups. Make chocolate sandwich cookies What you need ● 140g unsalted butter ● 140g soft brown sugar ● 200g chocolate spread ● 185g plain flour ● 25g cocoa powder ● 1 large egg ● Baking tray ● Parchment paper ● Large bowl ● Electric hand mixer Instructions Preheat the oven to 180° C/160° C (fan)/gas mark 4.
