In June, the people of France elected a new president, Emmanuel Macron. When a president takes office, they aren’t the only one in the spotlight – their spouse is too. Often known as the first lady (or first gentleman, if they’re a man), they offer support to a country’s president, alongside other jobs.
In the US, the role of first lady is well established. Alongside hosting important visitors at social events, she is also expected to perform other public duties.
