At a height of around 5,895 metres, it is the highest peak in Africa. Roxy said, “It was hard because you had to go up and down steep hills.” THIS DOLPHIN When a dolphin became stranded on Weymouth beach in Dorset, passers-by decided to help save it. When your parents and grandparents were young it was easier for them to play outside because there were fewer cars on the road. Now, busy roads and streets make playing outside less safe for children. However, a project called Playing Out is intending to change all that. The scheme aims to work with communities to close roads for two hours every week and encourage children to play outside. Since the project was founded in 2011, more than 500 communities around the UK have signed up. A recent study of the scheme found that people who took part reported a greater sense of community, greater overall happiness and they felt safer in their neighbourhood. As a 12-year-old growing up in Jamaica, Usain Bolt was more interested in playing cricket than running. Toy snakes that pop out of cans have been a popular item in joke shops for generations, but when it happens for real it’s no joke for anyone. Last week a man in California, US, was arrested when Customs and Border Protection officers discovered that tins of crisps he was having delivered contained three live king cobra snakes, which is a vulnerable species. The snakes were 60 centimetres long and hidden in small crisps cans, a bit like Pringles canisters. They had been sent from Hong Kong, and were found by US agents back in March. The man to whom the shipment was addressed could face up to 20 years in prison. The authorities say that his actions are forbidden under Cites (which is short for the Convention on International…

Francesca Servini, keeper at ZSL London Zoo Frogs have two types of teeth; they are called vomerine and maxillary. Vomerine teeth are found on the roof of the mouth, and maxillary teeth are tiny and sharp and found along the top jaw. Both kinds are used to help frogs grip onto their prey. Fingerprints Everyone’s fingerprints are unique, which means that no two people will have the same fingerprint. If police find a print on the scene, then they can see if it matches one in their records. DNA Sometimes a criminal leaves behind evidence, such as a drop of blood or a strand of hair. Information about the criminal can then be extracted from the evidence and uploaded into a computer. Police compare this with details they have on file. Google Maps heads to space Google Maps’ Street View feature lets you gaze around in 360° at roads around the world, but it’s also expanded into landmarks, from the top of Mount Everest to the bottom of the Great Barrier Reef. Now it’s adding a landmark that’s literally out of this world; or rather, it’s orbiting this world at more than 17,000mph. Google has captured the International Space Station (ISS) so that you can explore it from the regular-gravity comfort of your home. Now you can see what it looks like to float through the crew quarters or gaze down at the Earth. With around 15.8 million visitors every year, the Lake District is the largest National Park in England. However, the park is struggling after the Government cut its funding, which is used to preserve the parks and take care of the plants and animals that live there. To try and raise money, chief executive Richard Leafe recently announced that the Lake District would be getting its own currency. The Lake District pound would have the same value as a regular UK pound but it can only be used in shops and businesses in the national park. Art often divides opinion – some will see a piece of art and declare it a magnificent masterpiece, whereas others think it is rubbish. However, a recent poll of around 2,000 people has revealed the nation’s most loved piece of art: Banksy’s mural of a young girl watching a heart-shaped balloon float away. The image, called Girl with Balloon, first appeared on the side of a bridge in London in 2002. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora came into force in 1975. It is an agreement between governments across the world, and its aim is to ensure that international trade in wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. Almost every country in the world has signed the agreement. Cites was first discussed in the 1960s, when the idea for protecting endangered or rare animals and plants was still quite new. The agreement covers everything from venomous snakes to baby parrots and wooden musical instruments.…

Aleppo Zoo animals Several animals have been rescued from Aleppo Zoo, in war-torn Syria, and sent to wild-animal shelters in Turkey. Two bears, two hyenas, three lions and two tigers were rescued by an international animal charity called Four Paws, and taken to Turkey, where they will be looked after. Southern France Wildfires that broke out in parts of southern France on 24 July forced thousands of people to leave their homes. 8 August 1963 The Great Train Robbery On 8 August 1963, a gang of 15 robbers attacked a Royal Mail train on its way from Glasgow to London. The train was transporting mail, most of which contained money. One carriage was holding around £2.3 million in cash – that’s around £30 million in today’s money. The gang tricked the train driver into stopping at a red light and boarded the train. The robbers removed 120 sacks of money and escaped. After the robbery, there was a huge police investigation. A family of 13 siblings from County Armagh in Northern Ireland has just earned a Guinness World Record for being the oldest family in the world. If you add up all of the Donnelly family’s ages, ranging from 72 to 93, they have a combined age of 1,075 years. Police officers are really important because they keep our society safe. They help catch criminals, help us find our possessions if they are stolen and keep the peace. Being a police officer can be difficult and dangerous, but new technology is being developed to make their jobs easier and to keep us safe. Technology has advanced so much over the past few years that police officers now think they can predict crimes before they even happen – a practice called predictive policing. The Mercury Prize is an annual award that goes to the musician or group the judges think has recorded the best album of the year. It is open to acts from the UK and Ireland. Ed Sheeran is the most successful artist on the Mercury Prize shortlist – but experts don’t think he’ll win. Former winners The xx and alt-J have also been nominated, but the favourites are rapper Stormzy and singer Sampha. Google Expeditions Android / iOS (Free) Now it’s the summer holidays, you won’t be going on any school trips for a few weeks. Google’s Expeditions app is a fun idea, though; it’s a way to go on virtual field trips, using a smartphone and a Google Cardboard headset. Impressive doodles in the dirt A US artist has caused a stir in Queensland, Australia, with his rather unconventional drawing techniques. Instead of using a pen, pencil, watercolours or oil paints like most artists, Scott Wade draws his pictures in dirty car windows. Using a brush, a rubber tool and even his fingers, Wade uncovers beauty in grime. His amazing drawings are a definite step up from the usual dusty car doodle, and have even seen him compared to Leonardo da Vinci. Is this super-sized snail real?
