Beavers are among the largest rodents in the world, and they are renowned for their skill at building dams. Now, following a 12-year study in Scotland, it has been confirmed that beavers’ construction abilities have helped to restore wetland areas.
The word wetlands describes anywhere where water and land meet and mix. They are lush and watery, and include marshes, deltas (where a river divides into lots of streams across flat land on its way to the sea), flooded forests and even coral reefs. Wetlands exist all over the world, and they attract all sorts of creatures, including birds, fish, frogs and insects. Sadly, since 1900, around half of Earth’s wetlands have been lost, mainly because of human activity, such as changing the land for farming.
