National mourning after forest fires
On 18 June, Portugal’s emergency services battled 156 blazes across the forests of Pedrógão Grande in what the country’s prime minister described as “the greatest tragedy we have seen in recent years”. The forest fires are thought to have been started by a lightning strike and spread rapidly. Three days of national mourning were declared for the 62 people known to have died trying to escape the flames.
