Before the 2021 American Rope Horse Futurity Association World Championships, NFR heeler Hunter Koch borrowed this unstamped hackamore from former ARHFA World Champ Billie Jack Saebens. Here’s why. Koch’s take: “In transitioning a former working cow horse to the heeling, a horse can over bridle, meaning his chin and head can come back to me when I pull on him. I don’t want my horses overbridled or downhill, so I use this hackamore to help keep a horse’s front end elevated. Ahead of the 2022 $750,000 Women’s Rodeo World Championship (WRWC), the richest women’s event in the history of rodeo has announced a new World Championship race for both Pro and Challenger athletes at the May 16-18 event. The 2022 event will also introduce new changes including quarterly challenger classifications, a point scale for the world championship race and new exemptions. The Triple Crown of Rodeo event will be held in Fort Worth, Texas May 16-18 and will award a $750,000 guaranteed payout with equal money in all four disciplines. The organization announced that World Championship titles will be crowned in all disciplines (heading, heeling, breakaway roping, barrel racing) from both the Pro Leaderboard and the Challenger Leaderboard. I’ve always practiced on live cattle, and have had a donkey off and on since I was 16 or 17. It wasn’t until about 2005 that I started really roping a machine. At that time, I was roping with Speed (Williams), and going out to practice at his place a lot. They started their daily routine by roping a machine. Speed raved about it, and I took my turn. It didn’t take long for me to realize the benefits of roping a machine for both my horses and me. I was sold. So when I got back home, I bought a four-wheeler and a Heel-O-Matic. Our Western way of life is under attack. There is an ordinance gaining traction in Los Angeles that is a serious threat to the sport of rodeo and all Western sports—bull riding, barrel racing and yes, even team roping jackpots included. While the most common reaction to this is to sling insults toward “the left-coast crazies,” that will only play into these people’s hand, confirm their fiction-based accusations about those who wear cowboy hats and sink our own beloved Western-world ship.
