How to spot sloe
Blackthorn grows up to 5m tall as a shrub or small tree, with dark, spiky branches and small, serrated leaves. The berries are round, black or dulled purple, and around 1-1.5cm across. Forage in woodlands, hedges, along riverbanks, scrublands, rocky places, dry coppices and meadows in mid-autumn. Pick after the first frost (with gloved hands), when the fruits tend to be softer and sweeter. Though you can pick them earlier and freeze to ‘fake' this stage.
