In 1861, James Wiseman came to New Zealand from Tasmania and purchased a saddlery business from J McKerras in Auckland’s Queen St. Wiseman was no stranger to the business as his father was also a saddler and the two had worked together in Australia. In short order, James’s brother Alexander joined the business and the company became J & A Wiseman.
By the turn of the century the company, now called J Wiseman and Sons, was in the hands of James’s son, John, and it grew in leaps and bounds. The retail arm became a large general merchant, advertising all manner of goods including travel gear, sports equipment, car tyres, gifts, and more.
