In these times of the cheaply made disposable, when watches can be designed to be bought and thrown away when the battery runs out, it is intriguing and refreshing to learn there are still those who spend their time making clocks by hand.
My father, Rex McCaffrey, is one of those people. He didn’t have a plan as such but went ahead after seeing a picture in a magazine, to design and build a grandfather clock. Naturally, on a project of this scale, the hours turned into years and became filled with calculations, physics, and engineering nous, to make and, at times, remake components to get everything right.
