“IF he were human, he’d be a proper English gent,” says producer Katie Jerram of the 16.3hh thoroughbred gelding Barbers Shop, The Queen’s chaser she took on to produce as a retrained racehorse in November 2012.
“You’d find him sitting in an armchair, wearing monogrammed slippers and smoking a pipe, watching the racing,” she says.
Barbers Shop, the last racehorse bred by the Queen Mother, was in training with Nicky Henderson and won £143,000 during his National Hunt career.
Katie, who produces several horses for The Queen, took him on for the increasingly popular Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) classes.
In their first season, they claimed the Tattersalls RoR championship at the Hickstead Derby meeting, making it five wins in as many outings.
