For years the rest of the world has pointed out, with much glee, that Americans are the only sports fans on Earth to crown the winners of sports that only they play as ‘world champions’. Baseball’s winner-takes-all grand finale, the World Series, is another prime example. But, with football at least, that joke doesn’t really ring true any more.
By the close of the 2015 season, 14 NFL regular season games have been played under the ‘International Series’ banner at Wembley stadium, with the league committed to another six in London and one in Mexico. In addition to the International Series games, regular and preseason matches have taken place in Mexico and Canada, along with dozens of exhibition games in Japan, the UK, Sweden, Germany, Spain, Ireland and Australia.
