Not being a “skilled tradesman” has never stopped me from undertaking projects. Neither has fear or common sense. I’m supremely skilled at overestimating my ability. Shortages in skilled labor and limited finances have required me to push personal limits involving carpentry, electrical, HVAC, painting and drywalling, leaving me dirty, cut, bruised, sore, dizzy, cranky, stressed— and, once, slightly electrocuted—but generally satisfied with the work. I have established boundaries. Being wet, getting other things wet and ruining everything I touch involving water prevents me from practicing plumbing, by order of Management. Regardless of your skill set, be advised: Remodeling work on older homes often includes additional unseen difficulties.
