IN THE summer of 1880, the Finnish artist Arvid Liljelund (1844-1899) travelled to the small Swedish-speaking district of Korsnäs on Finland’s Ostrobothnian coast. The population there comprised farmers, fishermen and seafarers. What drew Liljelund to the area was the festive folk costumes that people were still known to wear, and the summer of 1880 became one of his most distinguished creative periods. One of the special features of Korsnäs costume was the colourful sweaters that men wore to Sunday church services and other festive occasions. The oldest recorded mention of this type of sweater is from 1854; incidentally, the same year that Korsnäs got its first parish dyer, Ulrik Ingström, who had lived in St Petersburg and had learned the dyeing trade there. HISTORIAN PENELOPE Hemingway is an expert on the tradition of Dales glove knitting, and the motifs on her ‘Swaledale Mitts’ were inspired by a historic example called the ‘G.Walton 1846’ gloves. This type of mitt or wristwarmer was sometimes called a ‘muffatee’. “In her unpublished diary, Marie Hartley, the writer of the 1951 book The Old Hand-Knitters of the Dales, commented on a now lost pair that she saw, after the book’s publication: ‘…Mrs Alderson… showed us a pair of muffatees that had come from Mr Alderson’s home. LATVIAN BRAIDS are horizontal braids which are a beautiful way to embellish the edges of knitwear, or to separate different patterns or motifs. They are made by simply twisting the yarns at the front of the piece and then purling a stitch. The key is to always twist your yarns before each stitch the same way every time on one round, and then twist them the other way on the next round. This gives the distinctive herringbone look, and also means you don’t have to bother with untwisting your yarns as you go – they will naturally untwist on the next round.
