“THIS WAISTCOAT is a garment that can be worn either open or closed with a brooch of your choice,” explains Viveka Velupillai. “The body is knitted in garter stitch, with the conventional ‘wrong side’ facing out so that the stripes blend into each other. The border is knitted in what I am calling a ‘latticed slip garter’ stitch. BLACK SHEEP Wools is a family-run yarn shop in the village of Culcheth, near Warrington in Cheshire. Its home is the Craft Barn, famous for its welcoming atmosphere, huge range of yarns, tea shop, and extensive workshop programme. It also operates a successful online store and hosts popular ‘make-along’ projects on its website. The business is run by Sara Mulvey, whose family established the business back in the 1980s. The Craft Barn was closed during Covid-19 lockdown, but has now happily reopened, with social distancing measures in place. TAKING INSPIRATION from the landscapes of Ireland, Tara Osborough uses hand-painting techniques to create the colourways for her brand, Irish Artisan Yarn. She uses luxurious yarn bases including baby alpaca and silk, and her range is filled with sophisticated colours. We chatted with Tara about how she became a hand-dyer. When did you first try dyeing yarn? “I started when I was studying weaving at the University of the Creative Arts in Farnham. I was always experimenting with how certain dyes reacted to different yarn qualities.
